Course: Geography W12 - Maps and Spatial Reasoning
Term: Winter 2024
Description: My goal for this course is to get you excited about maps and geographic approaches to solving the world’s most challenging problems. The learning outcome for the lecture component of the course is to give you a sense about how a range of critical social and environmental challenges are being addressed through geographic data science and technology. In the lab, the learning outcome is to give you a hands-on introduction to a range of geospatial technology.
Grading: The grading for this course will be based on 8 labs, 3 quizzes, a short writing assignment, lecture participation, lab participation.
● There are 8 labs and each is worth 6.25% (50%)
● There will be 3 quizzes worth 10% each (30%)
● There will be one written assignment, the map blog post, worth (10%)
● There will be 18 lecture videos (with two participation points embedded in each) and each video is worth .27% (5%)
● There will be 8 lab participation activities and each activity is worth .625% (5%)
Late lab assignments: Late assignments will be deducted 10% per day for up to 5 days. After 5 days you cannot hand in a late assignment and will receive a zero. Any concerns about your grades should be brought up with you TA or Instructor within 1 week of receiving the grade.
Map Blog Post Assignment: The goal of this assignment is to give students a chance to find and explain a map they find exciting and to evaluate the effectiveness ofmaps based on aspects (no pun intended!) ofmaps they have learned about in this course. Please find a map that you are excited about. It could be in the news, part of a research project, or generated by a community organization, or from a government agency. In the style of a blog a post, describe the map.
Outline what works and what doesn’t work, with an emphasis on aspects of mapping you have learned about in this class. The length should be 400-500 words. Late assignments will lose 5% per day and will be not be marked if more than 3 days late.
