Semantics/Pragmatics Assignment

There are 2 parts to this assignment. Part A is the data collection tool and Part B is the data analysis. The data collection tool is 30% and the analysis is 70%. If you are working in a group, the data collection tool will be group work and the analysis must be completed individually.

A. Design a data collection tool for specific speech acts. You can focus on just one speech act or a range, but you must specify the speech act(s).

As discussed in class, there are 3 types of tools.

DCT, perception questionnaire or publicly available data.

If you are designing a DCT or questionnaire, you simply upload the DCT/questionnaire to Canvas.

If you are using publicly available data, you must write an explanation of how you collected the data. You should include the platform you used (YouTube, Twitter etc), what search words you used to find the data (politician apologies, racist insults etc), note how many hits you initially got, how many you chose to analyse and why you chose those specific examples.

B. You must analyse your data using a recognised analytical tool (e.g. Blum-Kulka & Olshtain CCSARP). You can present your results in a table/chart or series of tables/charts. This is an example, or you can look for examples in the literature that you read.  After you present your results, you will write a discussion of the results. This will be a max 500 words and it must contain references to relevant literature.
