Math 0990 Syllabus – Online Sections

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Math 0990 is a developmental mathematics course (4 non-credit hours) designed to help students acquire beginning algebra skills in preparation to take future math courses.

If you experience unexpected circumstances which affect your ability to meet the expectations of this class, it is critical you communicate with your instructor BEFORE any assignments or tests are past due.

Any student requiring accommodations or services due to a disability must contact Disability Services (DS) in room 181 of the Student Services Center, 801-626-6413. DS can arrange to provide course materials, including this syllabus, in alternate formats if necessary.

This course covers the properties of real numbers, linear equations and inequalities, ratio and proportion application problems (word problems), graphing, linear systems, exponents, scientific notation, polynomial operations, factoring, and solving quadratic equations.

Upon completion of Math 0990, students will be expected to:

1.    Solve linear equations and inequalities.

2.    Translate and solve linear equations involving geometric properties.

3.    Translate and solve ratio, mixture, and distance applications (word problems).

4.    Graph linear equations.

5.    Solve systems of equations through graphing, equation substitution and equation elimination.

6.   Write an equation of a line in standard form and slope-intercept form from given data.

7.    Simplify expressions using exponent rules.

8.    Perform math operations with scientific notation.

9.    Perform math operations with polynomial expressions.

10.  Factor polynomials (GCF, Factor by Groups, Difference of Squares, Sums/Differences of Cubes)

11. Solve quadratic equations by factoring methods.

12. Translate and solve quadratic equation applications (word problems).

Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in MATH 0950 or an appropriate placement score.

Future Math Classes: Once a student has successfully completed Math 0990 with a C

grade or better, they have 24 months to register for their next math course.

Not all students need to take Math 0990 on the path to meet their Quantitative

Literacy (QL) requirement. You only need to take Math 0990, then Math 1010 if you must take Math 1050. If you are not 100% sure your QL requirement is Math 1050,

please contact the Developmental Math student advisor at

https://weber.edu/developmentalmath/Advising.htmlfor assistance. Many students can complete QL in fewer classes.

EMAIL

Your Wildcat email account is the ONLY official form of contact between you and your math instructor. Please check your Wildcat account daily. When you email your instructor, please allow one school day to receive a response. This means if you email your instructor Sunday – Thursday, you can expect to receive a response the next day. However, if you email on Friday or Saturday, the next school day is Monday. There are also school holidays (see your course calendar) which may delay email responses.

If there is an unforeseen event, such as natural disaster or other event, then course instruction will continue via the course website and communication with your instructor will be via WSU email.

Wildcat email can be forwarded to a personal account, but you should always email your instructor from your WSU Wildcat email to ensure verification and receipt of your message.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

If your behavior violates University rules, you will be subject to appropriate sanctions, including reduced grades for course assignments. A first-time instance of academic dishonesty will result in a 0 score for that component, and it cannot be made up nor retaken for credit. However, this component must be passed at competency level to move on. A second instance will result in course failure. Please note, using an app or any technology other than a four-function calculator to complete homework, quiz, or test questions counts as academic dishonesty.

Any instance of not obeying theStudent Code, or not following the testing center rules will result in a report to the Dean of Students and course failure. In particular, when you accept enrollment to WSU, you agree to the following, very sweeping statement:

In the WSU PPM 6-22, the Student Code, Section IV D. 2. a. viii) (linked above) it is stated:

D. In addition to the foregoing, as members of the Weber State University academic community, students shall:

2. Maintain academic ethics and honesty. To this end, the following activities are specifically prohibited:

viii) Knowingly obtaining academic credit for work that is not one's own regardless of the source of the work;
