BRIDGING MODULE: FUNDAMENTALS IN MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION

ASSESSMENT BRIEFS

Assessment Task 1: Journal Review (50%)

Review a minimum of 10 articles from peer reviewed journals and write a 3-page report of research trends in media and communication.

· You should pick one topic under media and communication that is related to your study interests. It can be (but not limited to) from the following:

o Journalism

o Public Relations

o Social/New Media

o Advertising

o Radio, Film and TV media

o Organisational communication

· The articles you reference should highlight the latest research trends and areas of focus in your topic. As such, there needs to be at least 4 articles that were published in the last 3 years.

· The credibility of the journals is also important, and these journals have to be indexed under SCOPUS or Web of Science. Articles from journals that are not indexed will not count towards the 10-article minimum.

o You may use non-academic references, but they do not count towards the 10 article minimum as well.

· The structure of your report should be in the following form:

o Introduction

§ Introduce your topic and why it is relevant in the field of media and communication research. You don’t have to go into too much detail but assume that the reader has a background in media and communication.

o Theories

§ Briefly summarize at least 2 theories that are used to study your subject matter. These theories should be media and communication theories. Theories from other disciplines can be presented but only if they are used to study the subject through a media and communication paradigm.

§ At least one of theories should be one that you intend to use for your own research

o Current issues

§ Based on your article review, identify at least 2 issues in your chosen topic that warrants further research. Explain and justify why it is worth studying and why it is important. Please be mindful that you need to justify the relevance of these issues with journal articles.

· This assignment should be no longer than 5 pages (double-spaced, font size 12, excluding references).

o Submissions that exceed this length will be penalised.

· References need to be listed and cited in the report using APA or Harvard style formatting.

· Please submit an online copy only on MyTIMES through Turnitin (20% similarity is the maximum and AI rate should be no more than 10%) using the Assessment 1 – Journal Review submission link

The submission deadline will be indicated on the submission link, but submissions will be evaluated on a weekly basis.

Assessment Task 2: Research Proposal (50%)

Based on the reviewed journal articles, write a research proposal for media and communication.

· Based on the review of articles from Assessment Task 1, prepare a research proposal for a media and communication study

o For PhD students, the research proposal should be for your own PhD research topic.

· The proposed study should have the following elements:

o Research problem

§ Propose a research problem that your study seeks to solve. Be mindful that it needs to be supported by research in contemporary journal articles.

o Chosen theory

§ Indicate which theory you will be using and justify why this theory is important to conduct your study.

o Research Questions

§ Come up with at least 3 research questions that you will seek to answer in your study

o Reflection

§ Explain how your existing experience can be used to help you study this topic and why is it important for you. As all students will be coming from different backgrounds, this section is important to relate that your past experience is suitable to make up for the lack of formal knowledge in media and communication

· This assignment should be no longer than 7 pages (double-spaced, font size 12, excluding references).

PhD students can write up to 10 pages.

o Submissions that exceed this length will be penalised.

· References need to be listed and cited in the report using APA or Harvard style formatting.

· Please submit an online copy only on MyTIMES through Turnitin (20% similarity is the maximum and AI rate should be no more than 10%) using the Assessment 2 – Research Proposal submission link.

The submission deadline will be indicated on the submission link, but submissions will be evaluated on a weekly basis.

Passing this module

Students will need a combined score of 50 in order to pass this bridging module. Students will be allowed to resubmit failed assignments (that receive less than 50%) up to three times for reevaluation.
