Using relevant scholarly materials from semester 1 answer one of the following questions in 1,500 words. Your response should demonstrate a good understanding of the topic/s in question alongside a reasoned argument and your own critical thinking. 1) What is management? Though we might assume that management is simply a question of economics or efficiency, the course has examined various perspectives which question the nature of management and organisation. In your own words and using relevant scholarly sources and materials from the course describe how you now see management.

2) Max Weber, writing in the early 20th century, suggested that bureaucracy had become the dominant form of organisation due to its technical superiority. What did he mean by this and is it still the case? Consider arguments for and against this statement using relevant scholarly sources in your response.

3) Frederick Taylor believed that his theories of scientific management represented a universal ‘one best way’ to manage work and the work process. Do you agree? Critically discuss with reference to relevant scholarly materials.

4) Human relations theory sees itself as a progression from earlier forms of management such as Taylorism in that it takes account of the human element of work. What evidence is there to corroborate this and do you agree? Answer with reference to relevant scholarly sources.

5) Critical approaches to understanding management – such as Labour Process Theory and Critical Management Studies – saw management as an act of exploitation or domination. Taking into account scholarly sources and material from across the course, explain whether or not you agree with these approaches in their characterisation of management.
