ME 104 Thermodynamics [F23]

Homework Assignment 2

[Due MON 9/11]

Text: Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach, Y. Çengel and M. Boles, McGraw-Hill, 10th Edition, 2024. The link to the book is provided on the course site.

1. Problem 2-16: Consider a river flowing toward a lake at an average velocity of 3 m/s at a rate of 500 m3/s at a location 90 m above the lake surface. Determine the total mechanical energy of the river water per unit mass and the power generation potential of the entire river at that location.

2. Problem 2-41: Water is being heated in a closed pan on top of a range while being stirred by a paddle wheel. During the process, 30 kJ of heat is transferred to the water, and 5 kJ of heat is lost to the surrounding air. The paddle-wheel work amounts to 500 N·m. Determine the final energy of the system if its initial energy is 12.5 kJ.

3. Problem 2-48: A university campus has 200 classrooms and 400 faculty offices. The classrooms are equipped with 12 fluorescent tubes, each consuming 110 W, including the electricity used by the ballasts. The faculty offices, on average, have half as many tubes. The campus is open 240 days a year. The classrooms and faculty offices are not occupied an average of 4 h a day, but the lights are kept on. If the unit cost of electricity is $0.11/kWh, determine how much the campus will save a year if the lights in the classrooms and faculty offices are turned off during unoccupied periods.

4. Determine the absolute (KE) and specific kinetic energy (ke) of a 100 mph fastball (baseball) in units of kJ & BTU for KE and kJ/kg, m2/s2 and BTU/lbm for ke.
