INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS:
1. Assessment Weight: 60% of the final mark
2. Delivery Method:
- Main Report: a short essay of approx. 1,000 words (no more than 1,500 words)
- Appendices: attach two assignments of the practical sessions (P2 & P4)
* Word count of the report excludes Appendix 1 & 2 and the reference list.
3. Submission Date: 5:00 pm on 28 December 2023
- Submit an electronic copy on LMO in word or PDF format (no hard copy submission required). Please name your report as "YourStudentID_YourName_UPD204_CW2".
- No need to submit the original dataset and intermediate files but please make sure they are stored properly in your own PC or Box to allow the module examiner to access your original files when necessary.
- Late submission penalty applies.
Aims and Learning Outcomes
The GIS Report assessment is related to aims and learning outcomes of the UPD204 module. Students who complete this assessment successfully should be able to:
A. apply the practical uses of GIS to real-world problem solving;
B. demonstrate the basic methods of spatial analysis;
C. assess issues relating to data quality and GIS use;
D. illustrate trends in the development of GIS;
E. manipulate spatial data; and,
F. operate the basics of GIS software.
Task
You have been appointed to a research post at a national GIS research institute in China. Your research team has just started a spatial planning framework to support national policy making and needs to develop a pilot study on how to apply GIS to spatial planning at the national level. In your final report, you are required to deliver a spatial planning practice by conducting a GIS analysis using the national-level spatial data. You should explain, and your report should demonstrate:
. a spatial analysis practice of your own using available China’s GIS data, for example, natural environment, highway network, census data, provincial statistics, etc. (for an international student, you can choose either China or other countries as a case study); and, . the process and result of spatial analysis that you have conducted. |
You also have to attach two assignments from Practical Session 2 and 4 as appendices (1 page each).
1. Appendix 1: Compare youth population and total school enrollment (Practical Session 2, Handout p17)
2. Appendix 2: Analyse locations of ambulance calls and the fire stations (Practical Session 4, Handout p16)
Guidelines
In order to conduct the spatial analysis using China’s GIS data available:
(1) you can use the available Chinese dataset in the \UPD204\Data\China\ folder;
(2) you may combine spatial data with China’s census data or provincial statistics for
which you can access:
① China Data:https://libguides.lib.xjtlu.edu.cn/c.php?g=159477&p=6717842
② China GIS Data (OpenStreetMap):
https://box.xjtlu.edu.cn/f/f5c308cfecf04a1fa2fc/?dl=1
③ China Boundaries Data (updated): on Learning Mall shown as below
④ Annual Dynamics of Global Land Cover and its Long-term Changes from 1982 to 2015: on Learning Mall shown as below:
⑤ Global Land Cover Data from ESRI2020:

(3) you may also explore more geographic data available on the Internet (you must cite date sources), for example

In ArcCatalog, you should create a new working folder called “Coursework” under the “\UPD204\MyAssessments\” folder. You must store all GIS data and ArcGIS files in the “Coursework” folder in order to allow the module examiner to access your original files when necessary.
You should design your own spatial analysis in considering: what the purpose of your spatial analysis is; why it is important; and how the analysis can be conducted. The outcome of your spatial analysis can include, but not limited to:
(1) a choropleth map using different variables from the statistics;
(2) a buffer map that illustrates the noise pollution or flooding risk areas using spatial features such as highway, airport, or water network;
(3) a measurement of spatial patterns using points of interest in China; and so on.
You must also pay attention to the map design in order to communicate the analysis results with your audience, policy maker.
Assessment Criteria
There are three marking criteria for the assignment:
