ME 104 Thermodynamics [F23]

Homework Assignment 1

[Due MON 9/4]

1. A 4-kW resistance heater in a water runs for 3 hours to raise the water temperature to the desired level. Determine the amount of electrical energy used in both kWh and kJ.

2. Convert an internal energy value of 438 kJ/kg to an equivalent value in BTU/lbm “one step at a time” (i.e. convert one set of units at a time) using ONLY information available in the text book appendices. Show all work.

3. A gas contained in a vertical, frictionless piston-cylinder device. A piston has a mass of

3.2 kg and a cross sectional area of 35 cm2. A compressed spring above the piston exerts a force of 150 N on the piston. If the atmospheric pressure is 95 kPa, determine the pressure inside the cylinder.

4. The maximum blood pressure in the upper arm of a healthy person is about 120 mmHg. If a vertical tube open to the atmosphere is connected to the vein in the arm of the person, determine how high the blood will rise in the tube. Take the density of blood to be 1050 kg/m3.

5. Consider a double-fluid manometer attached to an air pipe. If the specific gravity of one fluid is 13.55, determine the specific gravity of the other fluid for the indicated absolute pressure of air. Take the atmospheric pressure to be 100 kPa.
