Introduction to Statistics in Sociology

Assignment 6: Regression

This assignment is due December 8 at midnight. Turn in your computer printout and your typed discussion of the two problems. Be sure that you include pages that show all of your work; you can scan or take a photo of hand-written work to upload it. Please paste images of the tables and your hand-written work into ONE .doc file. All materials must be uploaded to Canvas.

1. Using the General Social Survey (GSS) data set provided to the class, examine the relationship between two interval variables of your choice. (You cannot use both of the same variables used in the example given to you in recitation.)

a) Use SPSS to run the analysis needed to obtain and report a regression table describing the relationship between your variables. Write up all of the steps to perform your hypothesis test (with an alpha of .05). Be sure to include all the necessary steps as you’ve done so far. Once again, you can choose to use a critical statistic approach or interpret the p-values from your table

Interpret the strength of the association in a complete sentence if it is appropriate to do so.

b) Using the results generated in part a), write out the regression equation describing the relationship between the independent and dependent variable. Make a graph by hand that plots out this regression line.

c) In one sentence, interpret the meaning of the slope in the regression equation in terms of the variables you are studying.

d) In one sentence, interpret the meaning of the constant in the regression equation in terms of the variables you are studying.

Note:  Don’t forget the second problem on the next page!

2. As a sociologist, you are interested in determining whether the level of education in a nation is related to the level of support for same sex marriage. Surveys of people conducted in 10 nations asked respondents if they approve of same sex marriage.  Data are also available on the average years of school completed for adults in each nation.  The results are as follows:

a) Compute the regression equation and the correlation that describe the relationship between education and support for same sex marriage.  Write out the regression equation and make a graph that plots out this regression line.

b) Describe the relationship between education and support for same sex marriage in nations based upon the constant, slope, and correlation between these two variables.
