RESEARCH DESIGN & DATA REPORT

ANSWER FORM

SECTION 1: RESEARCH DESIGN REPORT

STUDY DESIGN:

(approx. 300 words)

State the type of experimental study design that the researcher employed in this study, why this design was used and describe what the limitations of it are. Explain what a ‘Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT)’ is and how it would have addressed the limitations/’potential sources of bias’ of the current design.

ETHICS:

(approx. 300 words)

OBTAINING ETHICAL APPROVAL:  Describe three areas of the study procedures that a ‘Research Ethics Committee’ may have concerns about and explain what the researchers could have done to address these concerns.

OBTAINING CONSENT:  Describe the process that the researchers would have to implement to obtain consent to allow for the child to participate in the study.

SECTION 2:   DATA  ANALYSIS  REPORT

RATIONALE & HYPOTHESES:

(approx. 200 words in total)

Briefly summarise the systematic review paper provided (Love & van Sluijs 2019) to help you provide a rationale for why this study is required.  State the hypotheses of the study you are about to analyse.

STATISTICAL METHODS:

(approx. 350 words in total)

Main Statistical ANALYSIS: Describe and justify the omnibus statistical test that you are applying to the data (e.g. the ANOVA)

ASSUMPTIONS OF MAIN STATISTICAL ANALYSIS:  Describe how you checked/ tested the assumptions of the ANOVA you have used. Support technical terms with a lay terms description of what they actually mean.

STATISTICAL RESULTS:

(approx. 350 words in total)

ASSUMPTIONS OF MAIN STATISTICAL TESTS:  Report the findings of the checks/tests of assumptions and what action, if any, was taken as a consequence.

Main Statistical test: Report the results of your ANOVA using the appropriate statistical format/notation and in lay terms where necessary.

POST-HOC STATISTICAL TESTS:

(approx. 250 words in total)

Describe and justify your choice of post-hoc tests, and report and interpret the findings of them.

TABLES / GRAPHS:

(maximum of 2 in total ….. e.g. 1 table + 1 graph = 2 in total)

Provide tables and/or graphs (as appropriate) to illustrate key findings. Create new tables that are less busy than the SPSS tables. Label graphs so they are clear and interpretable.

INTERPRETATION & RECOMMENDATIONS: (approx. 250 words in total)

Interpret the results of your post-hoc tests and, based solely of those results, make recommendations to… (i) the researchers  - on how they could use these findings to modify a repeat of this study and (ii) policy makers - on how they could use the findings to best improve physical activity levels of children attending deprived secondary schools in the UK.

REFERENCES FOR SECTIONS 1&2:

(Maximum of 8 in total)

Provide a list of references using Harvard style (this reference list does not get included in your word count, although the in-text ‘Author/s (Year)’ references will.

APPENDIX: (SPSS OUTPUT)

Append all of your relevant SPSS output here (not included in word count). Make sure it is neat and well labelled.
