The    Bank    Management     assignment    is     a“    individual     project     requiring    each    of    you    to     report     a critical analysis   of Barclays.  The  pandemic   has   caused  banks’  credit  risk  exposures  and  impairment  costs  to increase significantly, which  has  placed  tremendous  pressure  on  profitability  leading  to  large  falls  in  the  market value of bank stocks in 2020.

Jes Staley, the CEO of  Barclays,  has  spoken of the  benefits  of  its  universal  banking  business  model.  Specifically, the contribution made by the investment bank in helping to offset pressures on profit caused by rising credit risk exposure.

Your Analyst Report should present Barclays’ business model from the presentation of financial results in July 2020. Using  the  financial   results  data  for  the   business  segments  you  identify,  quantify  and  compare  developments in  performance  and   risks  over  2019  and   2020.   Use  the  CAMELS   methodology  commonly  employed   by   bank regulators to assess the performance of the consolidated results and the business segments. Please ensure to use capital ratios and liquidity ratios introduced by Basel 3. Complement your analysis with commentary that explains how the business model is responding to the challenges posed by the pandemic. Your analysis should consider what the strengths and weaknesses of the business model are in terms of helping Barclays deal with the pandemic.

The Analyst Report should be around 2,500 words. It should contain tables and charts that will not form part of the

word count. You should place your tables and charts at suitable points in the report.

The assignment constitutes 20% of the overall mark for Bank Management.
