1    Instructions

Your report should be typed.  The graphs can be created using Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or similar software.  The final report to be uploaded should be saved as a single PDF file.1   If you miss the deadline, you may submit your assignment within 7 days (i.e., by 11:59pm on December 8), but this will result in a late penalty of 30% of the grade for the assignment.  Please see the syllabus for more details on grading.

2    Data

On Quercus, you will find an Excel spreadsheet  (ECO208A1  Data.xlsx).2    Use  the  information in the file to answer the questions below.  For each question, you should have one diagram with multiple series.  Please have no more than two diagrams per page in your assignment.  Make sure the axes are properly labelled, include a legend for the series, and ensure the text is large enough to read.  You will need to think about how best to plott the data to make the relevant trends as clear as possible.  For example: play around with they-axis range, consider using logarithmic scales for some graphs, and consider normalizing the series in other graphs.  Here are some geographic definitions that you will use:

3    Questions

For each question below, create a time-series graph following the relevant instructions and commenty briefly on the trend(s) you see in your graph.  A few sentences or a paragraph at most should suffice.

You do not need to discuss the economic forces at play (you should leave that for the essay portion of the assignment described in section 4 below).  It is enough to simply say something like  “the labor force participation rate is generally higher in the Maritimes than in the other regions.  It has grown fastest in Western Canada and slowest in Central Canada.  The differences in labor force participation rates across regions were smaller at the beginning of the sample period than at the end.”  (Note of course that this answer is just made up and is entirely wrong!)

1.  Calculate the labor force participation rate for the Maritimes, Central Canada, and Western Canada (three regions) from 1976 to 2016.  Create a time-series graph showing your results and comment briefly on the trends you see.

2.  Calculate the fraction of the working age population that is employed for the same three regions from 1976 to 2016.  Create a time-series graph showing your results and comment briefly on the trends you see.

3.  Calculate  the  unemployment  rate  for the three  regions  from  1976  to  2016.   Graph  your calculations in a time series diagram.  Create a time-series graph showing your results and comment briefly on the trends you see.

4.  Calculate capital per worker in the three regions.  Create a time-series graph showing your results and comment briefly on the trends you see.

5.  Calculate output per worker in the three regions.  Create a time-series graph showing your results and comment briefly on the trends you see.

6. Use the basic Cobb-Douglas production function, Yt  = AtKt(α)Lt(1) −α , to estimate total factor

productivity At for the Maritimes, Central, and Western Canada from 1981 to 2015.  Assume that the capital share α is equal to one-third in all regions.3   Use annual employment for L. Create a time-series graph showing your results and comment briefly on the trends you see.

7.  Continuing from the previous question,  calculate the total factor productivity in Central Canada relative to that in the Maritimes, and in Western Canada relative to that in the Maritimes.   Create  a  time-series  graph  showing your results  and comment briefly on the trends you see.

4    Short Essay

In 750 words or less, discuss how the trends in your graphs are related.  What economic forces might explain these trends collectively?  Are there any trends that seem to be at odds with each other, and if so, why?  Feel free to create additional graphs to support your aguments.  You may also use outside resources such as academic journals, newspaper articles, blog posts, etc., but you need to cite these properly. You can have a look at APA citation guidelines on the internet to learn how to properly format your citations. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden.  See http://www.writing . utoronto.ca/advice/using-sources/how-not-to-plagiarize for more on how to avoid this. Note that you do not need to cite the data you downloaded from Quercus.
