MEDIA 231

Eco/media

Section A: Please respond to THREE questions in Section A. Each response should be approximately 300 words in paragraph form. There are no restrictions on repeating film, videogame or television examples. Each question in Section A is worth 10% of your exam.

1 SECTION A

Please define “anthropomorphism.” Discuss how anthropomorphism can be positive and why it can be negative. From the course texts (film, videogame, television), provide one concise detailed example that illustrates how anthropomorphism can be considered positive and productive, and another example that shows how anthropomorphism is negative and destructive.

2 SECTION A

Please define “slow violence.” Identify who developed the concept. Discuss how and why “slow violence” is useful in ecocritical studies. Provide two concise, detailed examples that illustrate “slow violence” from two different course texts (film, videogame, television).

3 SECTION A

Define and distinguish First Wave Ecocriticism from Second Wave Ecocriticism. From the course texts (film, videogame, television) select an example of First Wave Ecocriticism and discuss why your selection is a good illustration of this concept. Then do the same for Second Wave Ecocriticism.

4 SECTION A

Please define “Deep Ecology.” Identify who developed the concept and what organisation best exemplifies its philosophy. Discuss how and why “Deep Ecology” can provoke environmental racism. Provide two concise, detailed examples that illustrate “Deep Ecology” from course texts (film, videogame, television).

5 SECTION A

Please define what is meant by “Blue Chip Wildlife documentary.” Identify the genre’s primary characteristics and which organisations have been most closely identified with it. Provide two concise, detailed examples that illustrate “Blue Chip Wildlife documentary” from two different course texts (film, videogame, television).

6 SECTION A

Magical realism and data visualisation are radically different methods of envisioning the Anthropocene. Define each method and describe the properties of each. From the course’s texts (film, videogame, television) provide one concise, detailed example that illustrates how magical realism can used effectively in ecocritical narrative. Your answer should be no more than two paragraphs.

Section B: Please respond to ONE of the prompts in SECTION B with an essay of approximately 800 words. You may use the same film, video game, television series you wrote on in Section A, again in Section B. Section B is worth 70% of your exam.

7 SECTION B

Most historical accounts of imperialism have failed to account for colonialism’s effects on non-human organisms and far-flung habitats. Select two of the films below and use them to critically discuss how postcolonial ecocriticism attempts to address this historical oversight.

The Cove

Grizzly Man

Darwin’s Nightmare

Possum

March of the Penguins

8 SECTION B

Ecocritically oriented animated films have been celebrated for their capacity to represent non-human creatures and inanimate environments. Select two of the films below and critically discuss how and why animation might be considered especially effective at communicating concern about environmental degradation and sustainability. Your response should also consider what some of the problems with the ‘animation is ecocritically effective’ argument might be.

Happy Feet

The Lorax

WALL-E

9 SECTION B

Some critics argue that the way to address the Sixth Mass Extinction is to build greater empathy between humans and the non-human. Others argue that collapsing distinctions between the human and non-human is at best inconsequential and at worst dangerous. Making reference to two of the films below, critically evaluate both of these points of view and make an argument for which one you find most compelling.

The Cove

Grizzly Man

March of the Penguins

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Happy Feet
