Environmental Economics


Course Content

An introduction to the economic analysis of environmental problems. In particular, an examination of policy interventions in cases where market activities result in socially undesirable impacts on the environment. Top-ics typically include: externalities; pollution control policy; climate change; public goods; time, uncertainty and the environment; and trade and the environment.


Prerequisites

One of ECON 103, ECON 103C, ECON 180.


Textbooks

● The required text for this course is “Environmental Economics’ ’ 8th Edition by Barry C. Field, Martha K. Field. (earlier editions acceptable)

● The free online book “R for Data Science’ will be of use for completing the assignments.

● If you want to know more about Rmarkdown, the free online “Definitive Guide” is good bedtime reading.

Assessment


Experiments and Assignments

● Assignments are based on data from the experiments.

– Assignments written in Rmarkdown with graphs created using R.

– No previous experience with R or Rmarkdown is required.

– You can submit an assignment even if you do not participate in the experiment.

● Participation: Experiments have 20 rounds: you earn .1% per round completed.

– Must start the experiment within the first 4 minutes of class.

– Must complete each round within 2 minutes.


Project

The remaining 40% of your assessment will be based on a project of your choice: i.e. a topic in environmental economics that you find interesting. You will submit an online 10 minute presentation (worth 10%) so I have an idea of what you are working on and then submit an essay (worth 30%).


Things you can’t do

● Have assessment weights changed based on your performance.

● Miss the start time of the experiment and expect to participate/get participation marks. The experi-ments require synchronous choices (everyone in the class making choices at the same time.)

Examinations

There are no exams or midterms for this course.


Waitlist Policies

● Instructors have no discretion to admit waitlisted students or raise the cap on the course.

● Students on the waitlist should discuss with the instructor how to ensure they are not behind with coursework in the event they are admitted.

● Registered students who do not show up in the first seven calendar days from the start of the course may be dropped from the course.

● Registered students who decide not to take the course are responsible for dropping the course, and are urged to do so promptly out of courtesy toward waitlisted students.

● Waitlist offers cease after the last date for adding courses irrespective of published waitlists.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should be familiar to the economic approach to addressing environmental problems, as well as the shortcomings/difficulties associated with measuring environmental costs and benefits.
