Midterm - Take-Home Exam

EGR 100 - Introduction to Engineering Design

(Make sure to watch the Demo Videos for assistance)

Total 200 pts.

1. The equation below represents the relationship between the resistance and the temperature of a particular thermistor.

(1)

where:

To -  Reference Temperature, 298.15 K (25 C) for this thermistor

B - Temperature Coefficient, 3950 for this thermistor

Ro - Resistance at Room Temp, 10,000 Ohm for this thermistor

R -  Experimental Resistance measured

T -  Temperature (K)

Calculate the temperature values in Celsius - C for the resistance values below using the   above equation. Subtract 273.15 from the values to convert from your Kelvin - K values   to Celsius - C values. These calculations need to be done in Excel. Hand calculations will not be accepted. (25 pts)

Calculate the average and standard deviation of the two experimental resistance values   and the two calculated temperature values at each time, in Excel. Hand calculations will not be accepted. (20 pts)

Plot the average temperature values in a scatter plot in green diamonds (y-axis), and the    average resistance values on a secondary y-axis in a scatter plot as purple dots. Make sure to graph the time on the x-axis and follow the figure rules for formatting in EGR 100 outlined in the lectures. No credit unless values used are calculated in Excel. (30 pts)

The standard deviation values should be used as error bars in each data set. Additionally, add a trendline for each data set. The regression equations and R-squared values for the   trendlines should be displayed on the figure. No credit unless values used are calculated  in Excel for the error bars. (30 pts)

Create two tables of all of your calculations. Make sure to label your tables and format them according to the EGR 100 guidelines. No credit unless values presented in the

tables are calculated in Excel. (20 pts)

Make a word document and paste your figure and tables into the document as pictures with titles. In the same document, type the equations and reference, and paste the

diagram, for the answers to the problems below.

2. Show how the hydropower equation can be derived from the equation for potential energy, when considering the power of the falling water in a hydroelectric plant. Also show how the   units on each side of the equation are equal for the final power equation. Use the MSWord

Equation Editor to type each equation and show all of the units. (35 pts)

3. Draw a diagram representing the three main principles of design and include ethics as a fourth  principle. Add the two important considerations in ethics and make all items in the figure a green circle with white lettering. Paste this diagram into your word document and add a figure title. (25 pts)

4. Create a citation for the following journal article using the IEEE method of citation formatting. (15 pts)

Engel D, Woolley AW, Jing LX, Chabris CF, Malone TW (December 2014) Reading the Mind in the Eyes or Reading between the Lines? Theory of Mind Predicts Collective Intelligence

Equally Well Online and Face-To-Face

PLoS ONE V9(N12) -pgs. 1- 16

5. Finally, make the whole document (answers for questions 1 through 4) a pdf for submission on D2L. Your Excel file should be uploaded as part of your midterm submission. Also upload your   signature page (page one of this document) for your submission.
