Tips

1.   Focus on a topic that is close to your heart

2.   Focus on a topic that has a dynamic aspect:

.    There is an unwanted dynamic (e.g. increasing crime, decreasing job security) that needs addressing – this can include systems that are changing despite efforts to change it (e.g.  some disease rates are not changing despite efforts to reduce them).

3.   You must utilise actual dynamic data (see ‘Problem Articulation’ section) – dynamic data = ‘behaviour over time’ (also known as: temporal data, time-series data).

4.   Do not over complicate your dynamic hypothesis - The aim is to understand complexity, it is not necessary to develop a complex dynamic hypothesis.

5.   Do not oversimplify your dynamic hypothesis – it must have enough detail to capture the narrative covered in your Problem Articulation section.

6.   Look at linking system structure and system behaviour:

.    What is the behaviour of the key variables (exponential growth, linear growth, ‘goal seek’)?

.    Ask what system structure causes this’?
