Assignment 1: [ Fall 2023 – F23 ]

Situational Setup

Due Date: September 18th  by 11:55 pm.

Late Policy:

• It is expected that students budget enough time to properly submit their assignments via OWL and allow for any unforeseen technological issues. Students are expected to regularly backup their assignments and submit well before any deadline.

• Each student will be given four “late coupons” in total for the semester that may be used to submit an assignment one day late per coupon.

• Each coupon is valid for a 24 period (6:00pm to 6:00pm).

• Late coupons will be applied automatically when an assignment is submitted late and tracked in the OWL gradebook.

• If a student has no late coupons remaining a zero grade will be given for the assignment (no partial late marks will be given).

• Late coupons must be used before special circumstances are considered.

• After all late coupons are used, no extensions will be given for assignments except for in the event of serious medical or compassionate grounds. A student must follow the procedure for Academic Accommodation for Medical Illness as given in this document.

NOTE: Students that enrolled in CS1032A after September 16, 2023 can request a limited extension without the use of “late coupons” for Assignment One only.

All assignments must be completed individually and without the aid of any outside service or tutor. Do not share your work or use another student’s work in anyway.

You must complete all of the following projects in one Microsoft Word file:

Project 1: Establish a Corporation

Introduction:

It is the year 2030.  You have a great idea for a product that you know will become a success.  You  have decided to start this company. You will begin small with yourself as the only employee working from your home. It MUST be a physical product that is manufactured and not just a service.

For this assignment, you are to give your company a name and you are to describe what the product is. This cannot be a real or existing company (with the ONLY exception being if it is an actual company that you started on your own prior to taking this course).

This product can be anything. It can be hand painted bow ties. The product can be scented candles or even framed pictures of your customer superimposed next to their favorite movie star. The only   requirement is that the product requires some physical parts that will necessitate raw material coming in and a finished product being delivered.

VERY IMPORTANT: It MUST be a product you can make or do on your own in your house. So this excludes making a new electric automobile or sneakers or a new cell phone. It must realistically be a  product a person could actually produce.  You will lose marks if the TA determines it is unrealistic that the product you choose could be made by a single person working out of their home.

You MUST to do an internet search (Google or Ask or Yahoo, etc.) to ensure the company name does not already exist. This is very important.

Throughout this course, your company will grow in size and sales. As your company grows, so will your Information Systems.

Future assignments for CS 1032 will contain questions about your expanding needs based on material we will be covering in class.  These questions will include not only your decisions, but how and/or why you made them.

You are to submit an MS Word document with the following:

Information:

1.) COMPANY NAME:                                                                                                                      note: - you must ensure the company does not actually exist,

even if it is a company you never heard of before.

(example: do a quick search on the web.  If you wanted to call your company ‘Working Bytes’ check to make sure a company by that name does not already exist.)

2.) COMPANY LOCATION:                                                                                                             note: - the physical location of the company (city and province/state and country).

must be a real location (on this planet).

3.) COMPANY FUNCTION/PRODUCT                                                                                            note:

- what does the company make?

- think of what kind of company you would actually want to start. It has to be a ‘manufacturing company’ that makes a product.

- the information must be detailed enough to provide a clear understanding of the functionality and the operations of the company. It does not need a lot of information but must have enough to

demonstrate you understand the steps required to make and produce the product. (See the example below to see how much information is expected.)

Execution:

Write this information inside an MS Word document.

Place your name, followed by the company name at the top.

Fill in the required information after.

At the end of the document, include your name, Student number and Western ID (the first part of your Western email (i.e. istude123)

Formatting is not important as long as the document is easy to follow:

The document should look something as simple as the example on the following page:

Dexter Erntwistle

Mxyzptlk Inc.

1.) Mxyzptlk Inc.

2.) London, Ontario Canada

3.) This company makes and sells specialized wearable plastic pins created from photographs supplied by   the customer.  The plastic pin is created using a MakerBot® 3-D Printer.  The plastic pin is then painted to match the photograph and then delivered to the customer through a carrier delivery service.

Project 2: Verify reading the Academic Dishonesty document

You enter Project 2 in the same Word document as Project 1 above, on a new page.

In other words, you will be submitting a single (one) MS Word document for this assignment.

Every student is required to know the contents of this document.  Failure to read this document in its entirety will not be considered as an excuse.

Part A)  Proof of Opening the Document

Download the A Discussion on Academic Dishonesty document that is attached to this assignment on OWL.

Write down your student number and on the next line write the last two digits of your student number. Finally, write the word that is that corresponds to that position in the document.

(Note: Start with the Title. So, Word One (1) is: An, Word Two (2) is: Important, Word Three (3) is: Discussion, etc.)

Examples (note: these are the actual words at those locations):

Student Number: 250845378

Last Two Digits: 78

The word that is exactly 78 words from the beginning of the document is:  it

Student Number: 250451903

Part B)  Proof of Reading the Document

Go to page two (2) of the document.

There are five responsibilities listed. They are denoted by A.) and B.) and C.) and D. and E.).

You must type out the first line (the line that is completely in bold) for each of the five responsibilities.

You enter Part B in the same Word document as Project 1 above, right under Part A.).

This part of the document should look something like:

Responsibilities:

A.) blahblahblah <but the actual words from the document>

B.) blahblahblah <but the actual words from the document>

C.) blahblahblah <but the actual words from the document>

D.) blahblahblah <but the actual words from the document>

E.) blahblahblah <but the actual words from the document>

Part C)  Proof of Understanding the Document

A.) What language is this phrase?

B.) Translate this phrase into English.

You enter Part C in the same Word document as Project 1 above, right under Part B.).

This part of the document should look something like:

A.) Language: <identify>

B.) Translation: <the phrase in English>

Note: This document might seem overly detailed or specific, but if it stops even one student from cheating, then it will be considered worth the effort on all our parts.

Project 3: Install DIA and your Plain Text Editor and Verify installation.

On the Week 1 section of OWL (found in the Course Content Tab), click on the “Install the required  software” task under weekly tasks. Watch the video and read the instructions for installing Microsoft Office, the DIA diagram editor and a plain text editor (Notepad++).

Install each software package on your computer and ensure it is working correctly (e.g. check that the software starts without error).

On page two (2) of the same document, below the Project Two from above, enter the name of the Plain Text Editor you have selected and how you will be running Microsoft Access.

This part of the document should look something like:

Project 3:

1.) DIA.exe (E-R Graphical Tool) Installed and running: Verified by Student.

4.) I have verified that I have opened Microsoft Access on my computer: Verified by Student.

Note: If you will be using MyVLab (only for macOS users with no access to Windows), you must also verify that you can transfer files between your local computer and the remote windows lab computer (for more

details on this see the MyVLab video tutorial in the Week 1 section on OWL).

It is the student’s responsibility to check that the correct work was uploaded to OWL.

If you do not get a grade for the assignment and it turns out when you look, there was nothing there because you did not submit it correctly, then you will receive a zero (0) for the assignment.

For future assignments, if a student states they submitted the assignment, but for some reason it is not on OWL, they will then be required to forward the original acknowledgement email from OWL

stating the assignment was submitted.  If the student cannot provide this email, then it will be   assumed the student did not submit, or did not submit correctly, their assignment and it will be considered as not submitted. They will receive a zero (0) for the assignment.
