Please pick an element off the periodic table and discuss the following in your research paper:

1.   Is the element a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid (i.e. a chemical element with properties in between, or that are a mixture of, those of metals and nonmetals), and what characteristics of the element relate to its classification as such?

2.   Please describe both the physical and chemical properties of the element (hint: in the context of how it’s classified in question 1).

3.   What family of elements does this element belong to on the periodic table, and please describe the characteristics of this particular family.

4.   Give an example of how this element is used in its pure form in society (i.e. when not combined with any other elements).  If it is not commonly used in its pure form, please explain what characteristics preclude  its use in elemental form.

5.   Give an example of how this element is used as part of a material commonly found in society where it is   combined with other elements to form a compound.  This material can be a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid. Please describe the physical and chemical properties this material (or compound), and explain how and why they differ from the pure element.
