ELEC210: Problem set 2 (Lectures 2-5)
1. Four charges with Q = 3 pC are at the corners of a square with side length of 1 m. The two charges on the left side of the square are positive. The two charges on the right side are negative (εr=1).
Find the field E at the centre of the square.
2. A charge 30 nC is located at the point (x, y, z) = (0, 2, 0) m and a charge of –30 nC is located at the point (0, -2, 0) m. Assume that the surrounding material has relative dielectric constant εr =1.
Find E at point A = (4, 2, 4) m
3. A square with sides of 1 m has a point charge Q1 = +1 pC at the upper left corner and a point charge Q2= -10 pC at the lower left corner. (εr =1)
a) Find the potential at the centre of the square.
b) How could you determine the spatial distribution of potential?
4. (a) Find the potential at T = 40 cm and T = 10 cm from a charge Q = 0.2 nC. Assume that the surrounding material has relative dielectric constant εr =1.
(b) What is the potential difference between these two points. (εr =1)
5. The electric potential near the origin of a system of coordinate system is given by
V = a xଶ + byଶ + czଶ
Find the field at the point (1, 2, 3)
6. Consider a region where the electric flux density has spatial dependence given by
D = x ଶ ො(x) + 2y ො(y) + 3zଷ ̂(z) nC mିଶ
Find the total charge in a cube defined by the six planes for which
0 < x < 3, 0 < y < 3, 2 < z < 5
7. A 2 µF capacitor is charged by connecting it to a 100 V d.c. supply.
