ENVI1003 – Global challenges: food, water, climate

Instructions for land system climate change mapping report

Due to Turnitin on the ENVI1003 Canvas site at 23:59 on Friday, August 18th, 2023

TASK OVERVIEW  Prepare a four-page report comprised of;

(i)   a full-page map of change in annual rainfall for your land system between 2000 and 2060,

(ii)  a full-page map of change in mean maximum summer temperature for your land system between 2000 and 2060,

(iii) a full-page map of change in mean minimum winter temperature for your land system between 2000 and 2060, and

(iv) a brief analysis and discussion of the three climatic attributes (approx. 300 words).

This mapping task is to be largely carried out in the Week 2 practical session (August 8th & 9th), and as this is an individual task, all students are expected to submit their own reports.

Following the Week 2 practical session instructions on Canvas, each student is to create a full-page map of;

(i)   change in annual rainfall for your land system between 2000 and 2060 (units of mm),

(ii)  change in mean maximum summer temperature for your land system between 2000 and 2060 (units of °C), and

(iii) change in mean minimum winter temperature for your land system between 2000 and

2060 (units of °C).

All three maps should:

.     be formatted in landscape orientation

.     occupy an entire page

.     contain the correct data/information

.     have a self-explanatory and accurate title

.     have a scale bar, north arrow and informative legend with units

.     have a basemap behind your land system to show the location within Australia

A discussion of the three mapped climatic attributes should be given on the fourth page, which should be formatted in portrait orientation.

For each climatic attribute, discuss the general spatial distribution of the climatic attribute across the land system in 2000, the spatial distribution of the change in that attribute by 2060 shown in the

relevant map and comment on how the change(s) in this attribute may affect present-day landuse(s) in this land system.

The value of this task is 5% of the unit mark.

This report should not exceed four pages in total length and should be uploaded to Canvas as a PDF.

References are NOT required as you are interpreting the maps you have created, and no other figures or tables are required, apart from the three change maps.

The reports will be marked anonymously, so please do NOT type your name on the report. Instead, the use of SID numbers only in the header or footer of the document is encouraged.

This is an individual piece of work  NOT GROUP WORK – each student must write their own discussion text.

Generative artificial intelligence (e.g. ChatGPT) SHOULD NOT be used in any way for the completion of this mapping report.
