MGMT2718 ASSESSMENT: ARTICLE REVIEW 1

Instructions:

•     Please download (via the UNSW library catalogue) and read the following article:

Guerci, M., Montanari, F., Scapolan, A., & Epifanio, A. (2016). Green and nongreen recruitment practices for attracting job applicants: exploring independent and interactive effects. The International Journal of Human Resource Management, 27(2), 129-150.

•     Once you have read the article, please write a review which is structured around the following questions (the percentages in brackets indicate the approximate weighting given to each question):

1.     Provide a summary of the purpose, methods and findings of the study (25%). Your summary should cover the following points:

A.    Briefly (in no more than 2-3 sentences) describe the two main issues that the study investigated B.    Describe the methodology used by the researchers to conduct the study

C.    Using bullet points, provide a summary of the findings of the research in relation to the five

hypotheses that were investigated. [HINT: You do not need to focus on the statistics or the

technical terms. Instead try to demonstrate your conceptual understanding of the findings using your own words].

2.     Evaluate the study in terms of its internal validity and external validity. (50%)

3.     Read the scenario “Viva Italia” that appears on the next page. Based on the evidence found in the Guerci

et al (2016) study, evaluate the advice given by each of the five HR managers at the end of the scenario

(i.e., is it good or bad advice? Why or why not?). Make sure to explicitly link your arguments to the findings of the Guercietal article. (25%)

•    The review should be a maximum of 4 double-spaced A4 pages long (Times New Roman, 12-point font with 2.5cm margins). Please stick to the page limit as it will be strictly enforced.

•     In completing the assignment you do not need to refer to any other research papers, other than the Guerciet al (2016) article cited above.

•     Article Review 1 will comprise 20% of your overall mark for the course (i.e., 20 of the 100 marks). You will be    marked based on how precisely, accurately and comprehensively you respond to each section and how clearly you communicate your responses. Sections 1, 2 and 3 are weighted approximately 25%, 50% and 25% respectively.

•     Note that it is important that you answer the questions in your own words rather than using phrases from the article. DO NOT JUST COPY WHOLE SENTENCES WHILE CHANGING A SMALL NUMBER OF WORDS. Also note that this is not agroup activity, so you should complete your reviews individually.

•     It is prohibited to use generative AI (such as ChatGPT) to search for or generate information or answers. If its use is detected, it will be regarded as serious academic misconduct and subject to the standard penalties, which may include 00FL, suspension and exclusion.

•     Due Date: The review is due by 4pm on Friday 16th June (i.e., Friday of Week 3). Please make sure to submit a softcopy via turnitin by that day in order to avoid late penalties (see course outline). Important information about using turnitin appears below, following the case study.

Scenario: Viva Italia

Viva Italia is a large Italian company with a good reputation as an employer of university graduates. Each year the company competes with other large Italian companies to attract job applicants for their graduate recruitment program. Recently the company has decided that they want to take action to increase the pool of individuals who apply for their program. Up until now, Viva Italia has mainly relied on its good reputation as an employer to attract applicants. The company has a recruitment website, however the website only includes limited information about specific current job opportunities and does not include more general information about the company, such as its culture, structure or any of the company’s policies or practices. Recruitment is considered very important at Viva Italia and consequently the company is willing to spend money on activities that   are likely to increase the pool of applicants. However, they also want to avoid engaging in activities that do not have a clear benefit in attracting applicants. Consequently, the company seeks advice    and suggestions from five of its HR managers in relation to what specific actions to take in order to  increase applicant attraction to Viva Italia. The five HR managers provide the following opinions:

1.    HR Manager 1 suggests that Viva Italia should invest more money in specifically enhancing its reputation as an environmentally sustainable (i.e., green) company. She states that this will    increase the attraction of graduate applicants to the company.

2.    HR Manager 2 argues that it would take too long to enhance Viva Italia’s green reputation. Instead, he suggests that the company should focus on providing more information on its   website about its recently adopted environmental policies and practices in order to attract applicants in the short-term.

3.    HR Manager 3 believes that the best course of action is to both increase the company’s green

reputation and to provide more green information on the company’s recruitment website. The    manager argues that there are synergies between these two actions and by combining them the overall impact on applicant attraction will be greater than only adopting one of the two actions.

4.    HR Manager 4 argues that instead of focusing on green recruitment practices, the company

should provide more information on its recruitment website about the benefits of working at the company, including training opportunities and career opportunities.

5.    HR Manager 5 suggests that the company should start a work experience program for university students in their final year. The manager argues that this will allow the students to gain more

knowledge about Viva Italia, and that this will increase their attraction to the company when they graduate.

Turnitin Submission Instructions

A Turnitin link will be added on moodle for submitting Article Review 1. The review is due no later 4pm on Friday 16th June. You should make sure to submit a softcopy of your review via Turnitin. Please only include your student id (not your name or other personal details) on the softcopy.

There area few important things to remember about Turnitin:

•    Turnitin is used to detect plagiarism. The software compares your assignment against published material and other submitted work (e.g., other students’ assignments) to identify overlap.

•    After uploading, you should check the originality report. If there is more than 20-25% overlap

between your final submitted assignment and other material as determined by Turnitin then I may be asking you to explain why this is the case. As such, if you have excessive overlap you should

correct this on your original copy and upload again. Turnitin only allows you to check the originality report once every 24 hours, so it’sa good idea to upload your assignment early so as to have

adequate time to address any issues well before the due date.

•    Note that your assignment will remain in the Turnitin database for an unknown period, during which time it may be used to determine whether other individuals have engaged in academic misconduct.   Turnitin stores the document both in its original form and in an "electronic fingerprint" form. The

original form of the document is only available to the original author and the lecturer of the course to which the document was submitted. Neither UNSW nor Turnitin administration staff are able to

view assignments submitted through Turnitin. If another document is subsequently submitted to

Turnitin and matches text in your paper, the lecturer responsible for the new document will only be provided with the following information: (a) the name of the institution from which the matching

assignment originated, (b) the name of the course to which the matching assignment was submitted, (c) the name and email address of the lecturer responsible for that course, (d) the file name of the

matching assignment, and (e) the date the matching assignment was submitted.
