Task:  Using the string trio movement supplied,1 provide a complete form-functional

analysis following the methods, terminology and conventions outlined by Caplin, as studied over the previous weeks.  Analysis is to include a fully annotated score and a short, concise  commentary (maximum 300 words/one page).

The score annotations should be accurate, clear and precisely drawn. They will need to follow the conventions set out in the methods we have studied since week two.

In the score attached here, the harmonic analysis is already included (using the

version of Roman-numeral analysis found in Caplin).  Please note, however, that this does not include identification of cadences (or cadential deviations, if present) and identifying   these is expected as part of the analysis.

The verbal commentary should not duplicate (i.e. simply describe) the annotations; its purpose is to point out formal classifications and theme types, as well peculiar features, deviations, nuanced or less-than-obvious decisions about analytical choices, and so on.

Assessment criteria and weightings:

a)  Accuracy, consistency and completeness of analytical annotations as per Caplin’s method (50%)

b)  Accuracy and insightfulness of analytical commentary (30%)

c)  Evidence of care, precision and legibility in score annotation, as well as adherence to conventions as demonstrated through Caplin’s method (20%)

A decimal grade will be given on the 7-point UQ scale, derived from a non-decimal grade for each of the above criteria, according to the weightings shown.2
