MATH 441: Topology

Final Project

August 4th

For your final project, you will be learning about a topic outside of the material presented in lecture, and presenting your findings. I encourage you to really go deep into some topic – try to find out something you suspect even I wouldn’t have seen before!

Once you’ve decided on a project topic, you have the next two weeks to read up and research this topic to whatever depth you are comfortable. Your final paper should include properties (e.g. definitions, theorems, and proofs) surrounding the topic you studied – and notably exposition discussing the context of this topic.

For instance, how does it relate to other math concepts we’ve encountered? Why are    people interested in it – what makes it special? Aim to discuss something precise – like a specific theorem, conjecture, object, application, etc.

You will be graded holistically on your project, with an emphasis on the correctness of  the mathematical content, your understanding of the material, and the presentation of the material in a manner which is appropriate for your audience. Keep in mind that your intended audience should be your classmates – they should be able to listen to your presentation or read your paper and understand what is going on.

Regarding explicit requirements, all that I ask is that you hand in a paper and give a short presentation, namely:

• By Monday, August 7th at 2PM, please email me ([email protected]) the following:

– The topic you have decided to work on for your final project.

– Whether you would like to give your 10-minute presentation on ∗ Monday (14th),

∗ Wednesday (16th), or

∗ Friday (18th).

This will be accommodated on a first-come first-serve basis.

• By the last day of class, Friday, August 18th at 5PM, please email me your final paper. It should be a 5 - 10 page exposition of your topic.
