EXAM CODES: MEC2403 /MAE2401
TITLE OF PAPER: Mechanics of materials/Aircraft structures
EXAM DURATION: 3 hours writing time
READING TIME: 10 minutes
Q1)The three steel bars shown are pin connected to a rigid member. If the applied load on the member is 15 kN as shown in Fig. 1, determine the force developed in each bar. Bars AB and EF each have across-sectional area of 50 mm2, and CD has across sectional area of 30 mm2. (15 marks)
Fig.1
Q2) A 1.8 kN vertical force is applied at D to a gear attached to the solid 25 mm diameter shaft A as shown in Fig 2. If the shaft AB is made of a material with maximum allowable tensile stress of 200 MPa and maximum shear stress of 40 MPa, determine whether the structure will fail at point H under the applied loading. (25 marks)
Fig.2
Q3) Two forces are applied to the small post BD as shown. Knowing that the vertical portion of the post has across section of 40 x 60 mm2, determine the normal and shearing stresses at point H. (25 marks)
Fig. 3
Q4) The beam with length L, elastic modulus E, Poisson’s ratio, v is loaded as shown below in Fig. 4. (7x5=35 marks)
a) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams
b) Derive an expression for the moment of inertia for the cross section shown
c) Determine the position X0 where maximum normal and shear stresses would be observed
d) Find an expression for the maximum shear stress value.
e) Find an expression for the maximum normal stress value.
f) Find an expression for the slope of the beam as a function of the distance from point A.
g) Find an expression for the deflection of the beam as a function of the distance from point A.
