The following assignment is a research project that investigates the application of the principles and phenomena of light to technologies and devices in everyday life.  You will investigate the structure and function of two technologies or devices that use different principles of light or phenomena and explain their impact on society and the environment in a 10-15 minute PowerPoint Video presentation.

Choose two different physics principles or phenomena based on the wave nature of light. Some examples of potential topics include:

• Total internal reflection

•    Polarization

•    Refraction

•    Diffraction

•    Interference

•    Dispersion

•    Multiple reflection

For each principle/ phenomenon that you have chosen, identify 1 technology or device that applies the principle/phenomena.  You must select a different technology for each principle/phenomenon chosen. For each technology or device, conduct research to address the following:

1.   A description of the structure and function of the technology or device, including: (4 marks: C , 3 marks: A)

•   An explanation of the structure.

•   A labeled diagram or image that clearly illustrates the structure.

•   An explanation of the function (how it is used).

•   A diagram or image that clearly illustrates how the technology or device is used.

2.   A description of the physics principle/phenomenon used in the technology or device, including: (4 marks: C , 6 marks: A)

•   The name of the physics principle or phenomenon involved.

•   An explanation of the physics principle or phenomenon involved.

•    Diagrams and/ or equations that illustrate the principle or phenomenon.

•    How the principle or phenomenon is applied in the technology or device to carryout its function.

3.   A description of the societal and environmental impact of the technology or device,   including: (4 marks: C , 3 marks: A)

•   a discussion of the positive impact on society with one example

•   a discussion of the negative impact on society with one example

•   a discussion of the positive impact on the environment with one example

•   a discussion of the negative impact on the environment with one example

•   diagrams or images that illustrate societal and environmental impact of the technology or device

Create a PowerPoint presentation from your research.

Cite all the sources you used in your research using APA format at the end of your PowerPoint. Include a slide(s) in your PowerPoint with your Reference page. Review the citation guidelines   below.                                         (2 marks: C)

Use your PowerPoint to create a 10-15 minute video recording of you presenting your research. (12 marks :C)

During your presentation,

o Explain your research in your own words with support from your PowerPoint slides. Do not read off of your slides!

o Ensure that your face is visible while presenting.  This means setting up your

recording so that your face can be fully visible to the camera.  Some suggestions are:

. Use your computer to screen share and record your camera and screen at sametime (or record using something like Zoom)

. Have someone else record your presentation (Make sure the slides and you are clearly visible to audience).

. Embed a video of you explaining each slide directly into the PowerPoint presentation.

o Check that the audio is loud enough and clear!  Your teacher cannot grade your presentation if they can’t hear it!

o Observe the time limit. If your video is longer than 15 minutes, your grading teacher will only grade up until the 15 minute point.  Any work included after 15 minutes will not be graded.

References Page: This assignment requires you to complete an APA style reference page that    should list the sources you consulted in the creation of your PowerPoint and video. This can be included within your PowerPoint.

In-text citations: Please include in-text citations for all text in your PowerPoint and video and all images used in your PowerPoint and video.

Reminder: It is expected that all text is in your words. Any information used should be paraphrased rather than directly copied. Any text directly copied will be considered plagiarism and result in an academic integrity violation. If no in-text citations and reference page are provided, the assignment will receive a zero and be considered an academic integrity violation.

Submission Guidelines:

You must submit two files for this assignment.

1. Video file of your presentation.

2. The pdf of the PowerPoint slides that you used in your presentation.

You will be assessed based on the Rubrics attached.
