This class is conducted primarily via the Internet - including assignments quizzes and reading. You will usually have two types of assignments each week: (a) Canvas quiz(zes) (visible on Canvas) and (b) Alta assignment(s). Both are available either via Canvas or from the textbook a week before the due date (see below for due dates).

The class will be conducted via videos which are available on Canvas. Note, the videos are mandatory. On a random base I will check on CPP Kaltura system who has or has not watched a video. Up to 10% will be deducted (proportional to the ratio of not watched vs. checked videos) from your overall grade. If you miss 3 or less videos no points will be deducted (watching the videos is due before the due date of the related chapter. E.g., You must watch the videos for Chapter 3 before 9/2/21).

Important Dates (due at 11:45pm):

Course Description:

Introduction to microeconomics. How an economic system works to solve the problems of choice among alternative allocations, utilizations, and distributions of resources. Applications of economic principles to domestic and international economic problems. Fulfills GE requirement for Area D2.

Course Goals for Students:

1) Gain a basic understanding of economic ways of thinking and approaching questions.

2) Be able to use simple theory to analyze real world issues.

3) Understand and be able to use the terminology of economics.

4) Understand how microeconomic principles relate to the daily decisions and activities of individuals, groups of people, businesses, and government.

5) Appreciate how economics can provide a basis for understanding how economic forces condense information used to make choices.

Grading:

The course grade is exclusively determined by performance on the following assignments.

Knewton Alta Problem Sets       20%

Canvas Quizzes (online)            20%

Midterm 1 (online)                    15%

Midterm 2 (online)                    15%

Final (online)                            30%

Up to 10% will be subtracted from your grade if you do not watch the videos/PowerPoint (watching the videos is due before the due date of the related chapter. E.g., You must watch the videos for Chapter 3 before 9/16/20)

(Subtracted points will be proportional to the missed meetings or Videos/PowerPoint segments.)

Please note, videos are only counted as completed if you watch them from the beginning to the end. If you watch a video a second time and you do not finish that will not harm the score!

Knewton Alta is an adaptive learning environment that will consider your previous progress when choosing new questions. It will help you reviewing the content. Use your Cal Poly email address when registering. If you miss a Knewton quiz even if it is one, it will harm your score. Take the quizzes early enough to avoid losing points.

Canvas Quizzes will be taken online on the Canvas course site. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. Thus it is possible for a student to miss ONE quiz without being directly penalized. If a student misses a second quiz the quiz will count with 0 points – no exceptions.

The mandatory midterms and final will be online as scheduled in this syllabus. If a student misses midterms or the final and has an acceptable and verifiable written medical reason (e.g., hospital receipt or paperwork from the student health service), then the midterm or final can be made up.

There will be no extra credit assignments.
