Class Schedule -

The substantive lectures will be delivered asynchronously for students to watch at a time most convenient to each student. All substantive lectures will be available on D2L (so a student will be able to view the sessions multiple times and at times convenient to the student). Transcripts of the lectures are not provided.  The substantive lectures will cover the topics in the order listed herein, but the number and length of each lecture will vary for each topic.  Most substantive lectures will be approximately 50 to 60 minutes in length, and there will typically be 2-3 substantive lectures uploaded per week.  In addition to the video uploads, you also can listen to the lectures in an MP4 format. While not meeting in person is certainly not ideal, this course can work efficiently on-line, and I’ll work to make it a good experience for each of you.  Let me know how I can make this course a positive experience for you.

Course Objectives & Content -

1.   To seek to understand how the U.S. legal system operates, comparing ideals to reality.

2.   To examine the process of legal reasoning.

3.   To  think  deeply  about  ethics,  ethical  leadership,  corporate  social  responsibility,  and sustainability.

4.   To define and apply selected legal principles from areas including: constitutional law, tort law,  contract  law,  product  liability  law,  law  governing  business  organizations,  and administrative law such as occupational safety and health law and environmental law.

5.   To analyze the public policy reasons for government regulation of business.

6.   To develop awareness of current legal issues.

7.   To discuss the term “critical thinking” and its characteristics, and practice critical thinking throughout the course.

8.   To be able to recognize the four core ethical frameworks used in business decision-making; to be able to recognize the strengths and weakness of their own ethical preference; and to be able to distinguish reasons for actions grounded in those ethical frameworks.

•     100 to 90% is a 4.0

•     less than 90% to 85% is a 3.5

•     less than 85% to 80% is a 3.0

•     less than 80% to 75% is a 2.5

•     less than 75% to 70% is a 2.0

•     less than 70% to 65% is a 1.5

•     less than 65 to 60% is a 1.0

•     Under 60% is a 0

Exam Schedule -

•     (1)  Exam #1 - 100 points (Exam Opens for 12 hours on D2L on July 18th at 8am)

•     (2)  Exam #2 - 100 points (Exam Opens for 12 hours on D2L on Aug 1st  at 8am)

•     (3)  Exam #3 - 100 points (Exam Opens for 12 hours on D2L on Aug. 17th at 8am)

Makeup Exams -

•   From time to time, and for various reasons, students miss exams. Every effort will be made to accommodate the opportunity for a student to take a makeup exam. If an exam is missed, however, there is no guarantee when the makeup will be offered (in part, because it necessitates creating a new exam and there often are multiple students who may be waiting to take a makeup exam).  The only absolute guarantee is that if an exam is missed by a student and the taking of a makeup exam is permitted, the makeup exam will be offered sometime before the conclusion of the semester, likely final exams week.   Under no circumstances are exams ever given or allowed to be taken prior to the date and time the actual exam is scheduled to open for the entire class.

•   Written assignments submitted to this class are generally considered confidential

pursuant to the University’s student records policies. However, students should be aware  that university employees, including instructors, may not be able to maintain confidentiality when it conflicts with their responsibility to report certain issues to protect the health and safety of MSU community members and others. I must report the following information to other University offices (including the Department of Police and Public Safety) if you share with me:

o Suspected child abuse/neglect, even if this maltreatment happened when you were a child,

o Allegations of sexual assault or sexual harassment when they involve MSU students, faculty, or staff, and

o Credible threats of harm to oneself or to others.
