Research Plan Instructions
Description
The research report takes two steps to develop: research plan and final report. You need to start to plan your project early. Each time after learning a new analytical tool in this course, you should revisit this plan and ask yourself: can I use the new tool to solve the research questions (if you didn’t know how to solve them yet), or provide a better solution (if you already had a possible solution)?
As a starting point, your team will briefly present your research plan and get some feedback during the Week 5 tutorial. Your tutor and your fellow students will give you comments and suggestions to help your team improve. After the presentation, you are encouraged to continuously improve your plan, and your tutor will be happy to give your further feedback during consultation.
In this research plan, you should: (1) define one managerial problem that you plan to address in this project and the research questions associated with the problem, (2) specify information needed to answer the research questions, (3) provide descriptive analyses of the dataset to show an in-depth understanding of your dataset, and (4) propose the expected outcomes from the analyses. In the rest of the course, your team should meet regularly to update this plan with new analytical tools you learn.
Contents
In this research plan, you need to have the following items:
1) One managerial problem and corresponding research questions.
A managerial problem is a problem with which you intend to help the manager, by conducting this research project. It generally describes the manager’s needs. In order to address a managerial problem, you need first find out some unknown insights. Each unknown insight associates with a research question that you can ask.
Only one managerial problem is needed in this project. Keep in mind that one report cannot solve all problems. In this project, try to identify one important problem and address it as well as possible.
Think carefully about how you are going to help the manager. On your research plan slides, the managerial problem will be a one-sentence statement; in your slide notes, put down one paragraph or two to fully explain the problem you propose to address. For each research question you ask, also write a paragraph or two in the slide notes, explaining how answering each of the questions will help address your managerial problem.
2) Information needed to answer the research questions.
For each research question, think carefully about how you are going to answer it using the information provided to you. You should:
Outline the relevant data items for each question, and
State what kind of relationships you plan to investigate using the items you pick.
3) Descriptive analyses of the data items.
Conducting descriptive analyses of the data items is a helpful way for you to have an in- depth understanding of the dataset. You should:
Conduct descriptive analyses for all the data items that you identify in step (2)
Discuss 3-5 key data items in the research plan presentation to show your understanding of these data.
4) Expected outcomes from the analyses.
For each research question, put down your “guess” of what you may find in your analyses. This is your initial belief of your solutions; during the project, you will prove or disprove your initial belief using your analyses.
The importance of the initial belief is to make you think ahead and provide a direction for your analyses. This exercise helps you plan your data analyses. Without thinking ahead, it is not rare that one spends a lot of time doing analyses, but found out in the end that they do
not help address the problem at all.
5) Other things you would like to have feedback.
Format
Use MS PowerPoint slides to put together your research plan. Take “notes” below each
slide to explain your thoughts in detail.
Your team has up to 10 minutes to present. It is NOT required that each of the team
members has to present.
After the presentation, we will have about 5 minutes for discussion for each team.
Submission
To help your tutor prepare and give you constructive feedback, please submit your
slides by 16:00 on 26 June (Week 5 Monday), so that your tutor will have some time to read your slides in advance. Submit via Moodle.
Use document title: “MARK3054_Research Plan_ [Tutorial class] _ [Tutor’s name]_ [One
Student zID]” . For example,
“MARK3054_Research Plan_T15A_Songting Dong_z1234567” .
Note: (1) you only need to make ONE submission per team and provide only ONE student’s zID from the group (to verify the group); (2) provide your tutor’s name rather than yours (it will help your tutor find your submission easily); (3) include all your team members (with all your zIDs) on the title slide.
Marks
This component is worth 5% of your overa ll course grade. The marking criteria are
provided in the next section.
Your tutor will provide feedback to your research plan during your presentation. Late submission attracts a penalty of 5% of the percentage weight of this assessment
component thereof per day (including weekends) after the deadline, and will not be accepted after 5 days.
Absolutely NO plagiarism - you must acknowledge all sources of any facts, ideas which
are not your own. Correct referencing is essential; please read the online Referencing Guide: http://www.lc.unsw.edu.au/onlib/ref.html. Either Harvard or APA style can be used for references.
Marking criteria for research plan (rubrics)
Criteria |
<50% (Fail) |
50% - 74% (Pass-Credit) |
≥ 75% (Distinction-HD) |
1. Identify and critically analyse the managerial problem (pick one or come up with a new one). (50%) |
Does not clearly or correctly identify or define/explain the problem. Proposes research questions that are not relevant to the managerial problem Proposes information sources that are not relevant to the research questions |
Identifies (and explains where necessary) some key elements of the problem. Proposes research questions that are linked to the managerial problem to a satisfactory degree. Proposes information sources that are relevant to the research questions, but may not be all adequate. |
Clearly identifies (and accurately explains where necessary) key aspects of the problem, and conveys its complexity. Proposes research questions that are closely linked to the managerial problem. Proposes information sources that are highly relevant to the research questions. |
2. Quality of the preliminary analysis. (30%) |
Does not provide descriptive analyses, or demonstrates little understanding of the dataset. Does not propose expected outcomes, or proposes expected outcomes with little relevance to the proposed research questions. |
Demonstrates a reasonable level of understanding of the dataset via descriptive analyses. Proposes some expected outcomes that are related to the proposed research questions. |
Demonstrates a high level of understanding of the dataset via descriptive analyses. Proposes reasonable expected outcomes that can be used to answer the proposed research questions . (The key here is “reasonable”; we do not expect “accurate” prediction of the outcomes.) |
3. Quality of communication. (20%) |
Does not communicate clearly or structure presentation coherently Delivery does not engage audience |
Communicates clearly and structure presentation coherently, but could be more consistently effective Delivery engages audience adequately |
Communicates clearly and structure presentation coherently Delivery is engaging and memorable |
