ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION:

The intention of this project is to explore design themes and how to begin to apply them to asset design. As designers we draw from past design trends, our own personal experiences and what we observe every day  in the world. The ability to see’ the detail and extraordinary that exists around us in what may appear mundane and ordinary is critical as a designer, as is the ability to identify and understand the historical context behind an observed design. We must learn to analyse artefacts and see beyond the superficial to distil out themes, responding to our experiences through our design work. Using your research and previsualisation skills, you are asked to reimagine an everyday object through the lens of a particular design movement examined in class and communicate your research process. Consider: What was/is this object used for, what is its history?

HOW TO COMPLETE THE ASSESSMENT:

This assignment should take the form of an A3 digital Concept board which documents your research            process into a specified design school and how you are going to apply it to your asset design in Assessment 2. The asset is to be a simple object of the size and type you might find on a desk, for example: Stapler, Telephone, Lamp, Teapot, Radio

Suggested Design Schools: Bauhaus, Art Deco, Memphis, Brutalism


Other objects may be chosen, but only with the approval of your tutor. Try to avoid copying students in previous classes but rather consider how to apply the design school of your choice to create a new object.

The design collage board should include all of the following:

1.   a set of original orthographic drawings of your adapted design, with measurements

2.   concept sketches,

3.   photographs,

4.   textures / Shaders

5.   text descriptions,

6.   References should be included on second A3 page.

Collage boards can be assembled in Photoshop, InDesign, Word or any other software and then exported as a PDF. Physically collated boards are also acceptable but must be submitted digitally for marking as a PDF   converted digital photograph or scan.

The Orthographics Drawings must include at least 4 cleaned up and accurate drawings of Top, Side and front views of your object as well as a ¾ view coloured concept of what you imagine it looks like in perspective. Each drawing must be labelled clearly with measurements and component parts. Consider  where each texture sample would be applied and include progress sketches showing the refinement of your object in relation to the design movement.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

A3 Digital Collage board formatted as PDF. Electronic Submission via Moodle Assignment Submission link. Must be submitted by 11:55pm on the Friday of Week 4.

PLEASE NOTE: Home internet connection upload speeds are often very poor. It is recommended you either upload your assessment on Campus or leave some time for uploading. Take some time to keep your final .pdf to a reasonable size. Files larger than 200MB are not recommended. Discard layers, reduce export quality etc. if exporting from photoshop.

The Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (such as ChatGPT)

PLANNING ASSISTANCE: As this assessment task involves some planning or creative processes, you are permitted to use software to generate initial ideas. However, you must develop or edit those ideas to such a significant extent that      what is submitted is your own work, i.e. only occasional AI generated words or phrases may form part of your final           submission. It is a good idea to keep copies of the initial prompts to show your lecturer if there is any uncertainty about   the originality of your work.

If the outputs of generative AI such as ChatGPT form a part of your submission, it will be regarded as serious academic misconduct and subject to the standard penalties, which may include 00FL, suspension and exclusion.
