MGTS7301 Tools and Techniques for Business Analysis

Part A Stimulus case study

Each question is worth 10 marks. There are 20 marks in total for Part A (20%).

Students have been given the case study ‘The Inexorable Rise of Walmart? 1988-2016’ and the Charlie Rose interview with Walmart CEO Lee Scott in advance of the take-home assessment task. In this section, please answer two (2) questions in short answer format of approximately 350-400 words each. Your response should be written below each question.

Question 1 (10 marks)

First, generally explain how the VRIN analysis can be used to assess Walmart’s ability to compete in the industry landscape.  Then, in your answer, define and identify the components of the VRIN analysis and assess Walmart’s E-commerce strategy under Lee Scott’s leadership. Finally, explain how the Strategy Diamond (Hambrick & Fredrickson, 2005) can be used to build on this VRIN analysis.  In your answer, define and use the element of ‘vehicles’ to explain how Walmart can attain market share.

Question 2 (10 marks)

The Walmart case study describes widespread criticism which has flowed from the firm’s growing market share and global dominance. Walmart’s senior leadership team seek guidance on how they might improve their ethical performance in the eyes of stakeholders. Explain the concept of utilitarianism as a framework of ethical decision-making and then appraise how this has been used by Walmart to determine ethical performance. Then, choose one (1) alternative ethical framework and one (1) Persian Business Studio insight to recommend a way for Walmart to improve their ethical performance. Your recommendation should identify one (1) ethical issue from Lee Scott’s tenure as CEO and provide best practice advice to Walmart for ethically managing this issue.

Part B Tool and Technique Reflections 10%

In this section, please answer two (2) questions and follow the instructions below.

Question 1 (5 marks)

This course aims to prepare future business leaders with enhanced awareness of the cultural context of their decisions. You are asked to draw a self-portrait that visualises your reflected self in culture so that you might be more aware, and better prepared, to respond to the complexity and challenges faced when applying rational business tools in other cultures. Take a photo of your drawing and insert into this document and explain this design piece in 150-200 words, drawing upon Business Design Studio themes.

Question 2 (5 marks)

The Business Design Studio has been introduced in the course to help critically reflect upon the rational tools and techniques and how these rational tools are applied by the strategist in practice. In 250-300 words, reflect upon your participation in the Persian Design Business Studio by arguing for two (2) benefits of adopting this approach as a complement to the strategists’ rational toolkit. Your arguments should be supported by one (1) example from your participation in the course workshops and one (1) example from your group work.

When you are finished save your submission with your student number as a prefix and according to the following protocol e.g. s3367967_MGTS7301_final assessment.docx. Then upload your single Word file to the Turnitin Take Home Assessment portal.
