Term Project

Report due dates:

June 7 at 11pm - final report due, no extensions

The term project requires you to read a paper:Comparing and selecting perfor- mance measures using rank correlations by Massimiliano Caporin.  The paper was published in Economics - the Open-Access, Open-Assessment E-Journal in 2011. A copy is posted on Smartsite.

The manuscript studies performance measures.  For the term project you will need to do the following:

1.   Define the term performance measure.

2.   Study the measures in sections 2.1-2.5 and relate them to statistical quantities and procedures we study in class this quarter. In cases where a measure does not resemble anything we have covered in class, state this fact.

3.   Investigate the objective of the manuscript with regard to the measures in sections 2.1-2.5.

4.   Identify statistical procedures used in the manuscript to achieve the stated goals of the study that is the basis for the manuscript.

5.   Provide a summary of the goals and results of the manuscript to a reader unfamiliar with statistics so that such a reader can make use of the results.

1.   The final report should be 5-6 pages long, spacing 1.5 lines.  It should consist of the following:

(a)   A brief summary or abstract,

(b)   A discussion of the measures and their relation to statistical quantities and equations covered in class,

(c)   A discussion of the study and results,

(d)   A section with concluding remarks.

You are allowed to work in pairs or by yourself. There will be no exception to this.  It is your responsibility to identify another person to work with early in the quarter.  Failure to do so in a timely manner might result in your having to work alone.
