HIST706 Gods, Heroes and the Rest of Us in Theatre & Performance

ASSESSMENT 2 (60%)

Case Study (2500 words)

Due Thursday 8 June

The question

How do plays and performances help us to make sense of the way we live here and now?

What to do

•   Select two plays and/or performances as material for critical analysis and discussion.

•   Explain how you came to make your selection.

•   Show how your chosen plays/performances fit into their historical and social contexts.

•   Compare and explore the ways your chosen plays/performances construct their relationships to their (expected) audiences.

•   Consider how they can be seen as to work to reflect and transmit cultural, social and political values.

•   Show how your analysis of these plays/performances helps you to answer the question of how plays and performances help us to make sense of the way we live here and now.

Notes

•   Choose wisely. Keep in mind the different challenges of analysing play texts versus performances, and what it might mean to think critically about a performance or play that is close to your own experience.

•   Do more than describe – analyse, explore and be thoughtful about the relationship between the theatrical and the social.

•   Go back to the questions in the class notes – especially about gods, heroes and the rest of us’ – and do make use of the additional resources on Blackboard .

•   Please feel free to use me as someone who can work with you directly to source materials that may be useful to your thinking and as someone with whom you can test your ideas.

•   Acknowledge information or ideas that are not your own by citing your sources properly.

•   Assessments are to be submitted via Blackboard.

•   The Special Consideration process applies for extensions and exceptional circumstances.

Minimum formatting requirements

●          Essays are to be submitted as Word docs using Chicago or APA7 referencing system
