Project Information Page

The project counts towards 20% of the final grade

In groups, students work cooperatively to explore the practicality and the applications of business mathematics in the real-world. Each group chooses a company for the project and perform the following three tasks:

I. The Tasks

Task 1:

Conduct a background search regarding the company, which includes the background of the company, company development in the last 3 – 5 years, existing strategies (if any) adopted for future business growth and development, and the general industry trends. Compare various companies in the same industry in respect of certain areas.

Task 2:

Find various recent news articles about the company relating to the “applications” that are discussed in this course. For example, applications in business management, human resources, economics, marketing, and accounting/finance.

For each of the articles:

● Identify the application that is discussed.

● Summarize what issue(s)/problem(s) are involved.

● Discuss how Business Math plays a role in the specific area(s).

● Make up relevant scenarios (and explore with different parameters) with your own assumptions to fully demonstrate the mathematics involved (here, relevant calculations must be included for illustrative purposes).

● Provide some insights related to the scenarios you have explored.

Task 3:

Discuss how COVID-19 affects the publicly traded stock market on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and more specifically, analyze if there is any significant impact on the stock price of your chosen company. Include all calculations to support your views.

II. The Deliverables

1. A typewritten report

Minimum of 2,500 words (with a maximum of 3,500 words), double-spaced, and in 12-point font (not including cover page, diagrams and tables, appendix, and references).

Your report must follow APA style format.

You are required to use external resources to support and substantiate your ideas.

A minimum of 5 sound sources are expected.

Covert your report in .pdf format for submission (i.e. submit as a .pdf file)

2. A “calculation” file (mainly for Task 2 and Task 3)

An excel file (or hand-written work) including ALL calculations that are performed in the report.

If you perform the calculations in Excel, clearly indicate on the “tab” what you are performing on each worksheet. (Submit as a .xls file)

If you hand-write your calculation work, clearly indicate what you are performing at the top of each page. (Submit as a .pdf file)

III. Components to be submitted

                                                        Due Date

1. Written Report (.pdf file)                 August 7th, 2021 (Sat) 11:00 pm
