ECN 425: Introduction to Econometrics

Final Project

Due by 11:59pm on Tuesday, May 2.

The goal of this exercise is to give you an introduction to conducting empirical research in Economics.  Therefore, the assignment is to conduct an Econometric analysis of an Economic question.  To that end, you will need to choose an Economic question, find a dataset, conduct the analysis, and write a report.

The only constraint is that the project must be original and be done within the standard Academic Integrity guidelines set by the University.  You are free to choose any question and data set that   you want.

Having said that, I am happy to provide suggestions and guidance on choosing a topic.  The first resource that you should consult is the textbook chapter on carrying out an empirical project. The chapter provides big picture guidance on choosing topics, concrete guidance of how to write up a project, as well as many sample questions and datasets which you are free to choose among.

My own research looks at housing markets and household location decisions.  Some questions in this field include how housing and neighborhood amenities are capitalized into price as well as   what are the factors that determine where households chose to live.  A rich and fairly easily accessible source of data is the Census micro data for 1990 and 2000 which is available through IPUMS.  (Google “IPUMS Census microdata” to access and learn more this dataset.)

You may work individually or in teams of up to 4 people. Ifyou form a group, all students must contribute to all components of the project. Each team must submit a written report that (at a minimum) includes:

1.   An overview of why the question may be interesting.

2.   A description of the data used to answer the question.

3.   A discussion outlining your methodology and modeling choices.

4.   The equation(s) defining your econometric model with all variables clearly defined.

5.   A discussion of results.

6.   A discussion of the potential limitations.

While there are no firm word/pages limits, an appropriate length would be approximately 4-6 pages double spaced.

I require that each team stop by my office hours at least once to discuss their progress.
