INSTRUCTIONS
1. ASSIGNMENT 1 relates to the following case study:
Helarctos Ventures: Investing in Seed-stage Start-ups1
Additional information is available on Canvas. The assignment is worth a maximum of 20 marks.
2. TEAM SIZE: You MUST work in a team of 2 students (or individually).
3. WORD LIMIT: 1,200 words (inclusive of tables or figures) +/- 50 words (this is a strict word range limit). Keep your discussion succinct and precise.
4. PAGE LIMIT: 9 pages all-inclusive (cover page, main text, references, tables, and figures). Do not write an executive summary.
5. STYLE: 3cm margins, 11-point font size, 1.5 line spacing.
6. FIGURES & TABLES: You may include a maximum of 6 figures and/or tables. Figures and tables should be properly labeled with captions.
7. VIRUS CHECK: Check your file for viruses before you submit it.
8. PLAGIARISM DECLARATION: By submitting your work you declare that you have read and understood the plagiarism declaration statement under the ASSIGNMENT tab on Canvas, and that it is your own work and does not involve plagiarism or collusion.2 Note, if you work in a team, this applies to all team members. The use of any artificial intelligence software such as ChatGPT is not permitted.
9. SUBMISSION RESPONSIBILITY: You are jointly responsible for the submitting your essay on time. Make sure that you register your group on Canvas before 5PM, March 24, 2023. Assignment group registration is available under the PEOPLE tab on Canvas.
10. FILE NAME: Save the essay file using your student ID(s), e.g., with student IDs
12345 and 99999 as 12345_99999.docx or 12345_99999.pdf. Do NOT include your name(s) in the file name. Incorrect file names are penalized by 1 mark.
11. SUBMISSION: Submit your assignment via Canvas.
12. LATE SUBMISSIONS: Penalty of 4 marks per 24 hours. Penalty is applied proportionally.
13. You MUST NOT use any case study solutions, support services, or artificial intelligence software such as ChatGPT or copy.ai.
Assignment
Read the case study “Helarctos Ventures: Investing in Seed-stage Start-ups” . Assume that it is October 2018.
Use the information given in the case study to address the following questions.
(a) How do Joshi and Helarctos Ventures (HV) evaluate potential start-ups to invest in?
(b) Should Joshi and HV use the Venture Evaluation Matrix? Why? Why not?
(c) Would you recommend Joshi and HV to modify their evaluation approach? If not, why not? If so, how?
