Hand-in Assignment 2

T1, 2023  ELEC4614

March 2023

You are required to submit this hand-in assignment for ELEC4614. The mark from this assignment will contribute to   10% of your final class mark. You are expected to submit this hand-in assignment using a PDF file via the Assignment 2 link on the Moodle page before 3pm on the Friday of week 8 T1 2023. Late submissions will not be accepted. You  must include a signed cover sheet declaring that the work submitted is your own work and this must be the first page of the assignment. The cover sheet is on the Openlearning site.

Question 1

a)   Complete the following table for the family of dc-dc converters that are not isolated. The subscripts are as follows: ‘o’ is the output, ‘d’ is the input, ‘L’ is the inductor, ‘D’ is the diode, ‘∆’ indicates the maximum instantaneous step in current. A capital ‘I’ indicates the average value as opposed to ‘∆Ic’ which indicates the magnitude of the step in current in the capacitor (if there is no step or discontinuity in the capacitor current  then Ic would represent the peak-peak ripple current in the capacitor).

b)   A power supply is required that converts 10V to 6V with a maximum output current of 3A into a 2Ω load. Assuming a Buck converter operating in CCM, calculate the average input current, Id, and the inductor current IL . (Your answers above may help.) [2 marks]

c)    In the same circumstances, but using a Buck-Boost circuit, highlight the difference in the the inductor current, IL . [1 marks]

d)   A power supply is required to boost a 12V battery output to 48V. Compare the operation of the boost converter with the operation of the buck-boost converter, both circuits operating in CCM. Specifically determine the required, D, in each case and compare the average inductor current. [4 marks]
