Assessment 1 - Design

This document provides you with information about the requirements for your assessment. Detailed instructions and resources are included for completing the task. The Criterion Reference Assessment (CRA) Rubric that markers use to grade the assessment task is included.

Task description

You are required to design an environment that encourages learning for a group of young children, with a focus on mathematics learning. You are required to annotate this learning environment drawing upon curriculum/guidelines as well as scholarly evidence. You will be required to provide a written description and justification (700 words) of a resource that would develop mathematical understandings within the content stands of Measurement and Geometry or Statistics and Probability.

This is an authentic assessment because as future educators you will need to plan effective learning environments that encourage and foster learning.

Submission information

What you need to do

Educators are required to plan effective learning environments. This task will develop your:

1. Understanding of early childhood mathematics education.

2. Understanding of appropriate curriculum documents.

3. Ability to research, plan and justify inclusive early childhood environments that promote age-appropriate mathematical learning.

In order to do this, you are required to submit two components in this task. The first is an annotated diagram (A3 size) of a learning environment (e.g., classroom layout, outdoor setting) that promotes the mathematical learning of children. The second is a written description and justification (700 words) of a resource that would develop mathematical understandings within the content strands of Measurement and Geometry or Statistics and Probability. To do this, you need to:

1. Select an age group prior to school or in early primary (Prep – Year 3).

2. Research and design an appropriate learning environment (e.g., classroom layout) to help develop mathematical concepts for your chosen age group. Emphasis needs to be on the Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability strands. You will need to draw a diagram of this space.

3. You will need to include annotations on your learning environment diagram. Each annotation will:

a. Point to an aspect on the diagram

b. Tell the reader how it will help learners develop mathematical skills

c. Refer to research, guidelines, frameworks and curriculum documents where appropriate.

4. Select one resource that you would use in your environment that will enable mathematics learning within the strands of either Measurement, Geometry, Statistics or Probability. This resource only has to target one of these areas.

5. Write a 700 word rationale explaining how the resource will help learners develop this understanding, linked to scholarly evidence.

Moderation

All staff who are assessing your work meet to discuss and compare their judgements before marks or grades are finalised.

Academic Integrity

As a student of the QUT academic community, you are asked to work to uphold the principles of academic integrity during your course of study. QUT sets expectations and responsibilities of students, more specifically it states that students “adopt an ethical approach to academic work and assessment in accordance with this policy and the Student Code of Conduct. E/2.1 (MOPP C/5.3 Academic Integrity).

At university, students are expected to demonstrate their own understanding and thinking using the ideas provided by ‘others’ to support and inform their work, always making due acknowledgement to the source. While we encourage peer learning, it is not appropriate to share assignments with other students unless your assessment piece has been stated as being a group assignment. If you do share your assignment with another student, and they copy part of or all of your assignment for their submission, this is considered collusion and you may also be reported for academic misconduct.  If you are unsure and need further information you can find this at http://www.mopp.qut.edu.au/C/C_05_03.jsp#C_05_03.03.mdoc.
