Tutorial 1 questions

1. For each of the following ODEs and PDEs, determine whether the DE is linear or nonlinear.

(a) uα  = x2

(b) utt  = uut

(c)  V2u + k2u = 0,  where V2u =  +  .

(d) uαα + ug ugg  = 0.

(e) uαα + ugg  = eu .

(f) xuα + ug  = u.

2. For each of the following sets of boundary conditions, answer the following: (i) Are these boundary conditions homogeneous? (ii) Why, or why not?

(a)

(b)

(c)

(d)

Recall that homogeneous boundary conditions are BCs such that if f (x, t) and g(x, t) both satisfy the BCs, then so does h(x, t) = af (x, t) + bg(x, t) for any real numbers a and b.

3. This question is about the PDE

ut  = uαα ,   u(0, t) = 0, uα (π, t) = 0, u(x, 0) = sin(x/2) defined for x ∈ [0, π].

(a) Assuming there is a solution of the PDE of the form u(x, t) = X(x)T (t) (i.e., assuming the PDE is separable), show that X(x) satisfies the BVP

X\\ βX = 0,   X(0) = 0, X\ (π) = 0

for some constant β .

(b) What ODE does T (t) satisfy?

(c)  Solve the BVP for X(x).

(d) For which values of β is there a non-zero solution to the BVP?

4. A litre of chlorine bleach is poured into one corner of a full swimming pool that is 50 m long,  12.5 m wide and  1.5 m deep.   Write down a PDE plus boundary conditions and initial conditions to model the way the concentration of chlorine varies with time and position. What assumptions are you making in your model?

5. Think of a concept that you have found particularly interesting or challenging in the course so far.  Discuss it with the person next to you.  Try to explain it to each other.
