DSS012Y DataVisualization forthe Social Sciences
Elements of a Write Up
Narrative:
1. Interpretation of the data set
Interpret the data in words – don’t just repeat the information that
is presented in a table or figure.
2. Clear, logical and consistent organization
You will walk your reader through the data’s “story”
3. Conclusion / Summary of findings
Your conclusion must be supported by the data
Visualization:
1. You will include appropriate tables and figures
The tables and figures follow the text where they are referenced.
Each figure has a name (Table 1, Figure 3).
Each figure is complete (Title, labels, etc)
The figure must be referenced in your written text. If you don’t discuss it, you can’t include it!
Accurate – don’t distort the data
Not too few – but not too many, either. Just what is relevant to tell your story.
2. You will include appropriate descriptive statistics
a. For categorical outcome data: counts and proportions
b. For continuous outcome data: means, sd, range
c. Always include sample size (N). Also include group sizes (n)
Logistics
Write ups must be submitted as a .pdf
See the syllabus for details on the penalty for late work
