2-  The origin of mitochondria and chloroplasts - discuss the endosymbiosis theory (use

information on ch.7 for help.) and its value for the understanding of cell evolution.

3-   Inheritance of traits - Using the table 12.1 and 12.3 on pg. 225 (8   edition) choose one

of the human traits listed and research it (use information on ch. 12  (ch. 13 on 9th edition) for help. I will send this table for those who do not have the book.

4-   Genetic engineering - Using the table 16.1 on pg. 342 (8   edition) choose one of the

diseases listed and research how genetic engineering is helping deal with it use          information on ch. 16  (ch. 17 on 9th edition) for help. I will send the mentioned table.

5-  Extinction events -  research the event that took place about 65 million years ago and its

consequences for the human species  (use information on ch. 22 for help.)

6-  Mendelian genetics – research how Mendel did his experiments and summarize his

conclusions (use information on ch. 12 for help.)

7-  Charles Darwin and Evolution – research how Darwin reached his conclusions during

his voyage in the Beagle. Present the facts and observations that he did and how relevant they are for his theory.

8-  Evolutionary relatedness among the vertebrates – analyze evolutionary links among

the vertebrate classes (fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals) using genetic                information available (protein fingerprinting, hox-genes, mutation rates, gene duplication, etc.). Give examples.

9-  Animal defense mechanisms - discuss the various mechanisms that exist. Keywords to

take in attention: toxins, chemical defenses, mechanical defenses, invading species, physiological tolerance.

10- Cloning and evolution – discuss how modern cloning techniques can help our

understanding of molecular evolution. Keywords to pay attention: symbiosis, cell duplication, vector, plasmids, cell determination and reversal, transplant.
