Summative Assignment Guidance Note
This note is intended as a guidance in addressing the summative assessment and should be read in conjunction with the summative assessment document.
Part A
Firstly, you need to make sure that the company that you choose for this assignment is a company listed on the London Stock Exchange. It is advisable that you choose one of the FTSE100 or FTSE 250 companies.
The most important financial statement for the purpose of this assignment is the Statement of Financial Performance (Group Income Statement). A thorough analysis of the Statement of Financial Performance across the three years is required and should be supported by appropriate financial ratios, vertical and trend analysis.
An overview of the Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet) should also be conducted, identifying any significant features particularly as they relate to the company’s performance during the period. For example, a large increase in borrowings would have an effect on the finance cost in the Group Income Statement. An in-depth analysis of the Statement of Financial Position is not required but features relevant to the performance should be discussed.
To fully understand the company’s financial performance, you will need to engage with the Strategic Report and some of the notes to the accounts which follow the financial statements, such as those relating to segmental analysis, exceptional items, and staff numbers. Please note that many of the additional notes to the accounts are beyond the scope of the module and the assignment.
From your study of the relevant annual report, you need to derive and demonstrate an understanding of how the business work, including the factors which have affected and strategies which have influenced its performance over the stated period. The analysis should be undertaken in the light of general economic and industry specific context and should include consideration of investor ratios.
Part B
In addition to the assessment of the company’s financial performance as demonstrated in the Group Income Statement, you are required to explore the company’s wider use of the performance measurement; both financial and non-financial. You should evaluate how performance measurements is applied within the company and to what effect, drawing comparisons with performance measurement as it was demonstrated in the annual reports of another company used as a comparator in this task.
Your review should capture why a particular performance measures are used by the companies whilst addressing all the specific requirements of this part. You should include consideration of the use of performance measurement in remunerating the directors, although a detailed examination of the Directors’ Remuneration Report is not required.
To assist in tackling both aspects of the assignment within a single submission, you are advised to adopt a structure along the lines suggested below:
• Introduction to the assignment, the company, and the rationale for your choice
• Overview of the Statement of Financial Performance and Statement of Financial Position, with emphasis on the former
• Analysis of the Statement of Financial Performance, you should go beyond description, to discussing the causes of and the reasons for the performance reported.
• The role of performance measurement (financial and non-financial, including the key performance indicators).
• The application of performance measurement within your main company and the comparator company.
• Conclusion
• Appendix including the Statement of Financial Performance and the Statement of Financial Position for the three years
• Use of appropriate tables and graphs should also be considered
Part C
This part forms a separate element within the module, which is the Management Accounting element. Like any other essay the structure should comprise of Introduction, Body of Discussions, and Conclusion.
