ES99H Sustainable Cities and Infrastructures for Emergencies

Assignment Briefing 2022-23

Individual Portfolio

Objective

You have been tasked from your Employer, an engineering design consultancy, to create the conceptual design and set up of a camp to host 15,000 members of a community for a period of at least 60 months, while the community works to rebuild their lives .

You are expected to choose the size of the site and offer a conceptual design for the camp including shelter solutions according to the UNHCR Camp Planning Standards.

Sketches, drawings (by hand or CAD) and any other means that you see fit shall be used to evidence the proposed design and shelter solutions. The proposed shelter solutions do not necessarily have to be invented ‘from scratch’ . They can be based on shelter kits that have been successfully used in previous disasters by other organisations.

Design Guidelines and Specifications

You may wish to consider the following guidelines and specifications:

a.    Choose a country and location to position your camp.

b.    The site is flat (gradient approximately 2%) with a rectangular shape.

c.     Consider and reflect on, as many as possible, aspects of camp and shelter development after disasters (assistance methods vary greatly depending on the location, context, type of disaster, local capacities, scale and resources). Make relevant assumptions that will enable a pragmatic design.

d.    Evidence the conceptual camp design via list of facilities e.g. shelters including number and size of each, infrastructure e.g. transportation routes, services (restaurants, storage areas, medical facilities on the camp), and offer available 2-3 shelter solutions (case studies of shelter solutions implemented in past disaster events can be included here).

e.    You must choose one renewable solution to power 50% of your camp (options: wind, geothermal, solar, hydroelectric, or biomass).  Discuss about this solution considering the particularities of your design (location: region, country etc.).

f.     Your camp shall demonstrate features of sustainable cities e.g. public green spaces, parks, and natural areas, green roofs (if possible), efficient lighting etc.

Discussion and Reflection

As part of your portfolio elements, you may wish to discuss and reflect on the following:

a.    Strengths and weaknesses of the camp design, what features make it sustainable and which features have room for improvement.

b.    Explanation of how chosen solutions are appropriate for the country, location and community.

c.     Pros & cons of proposed shelter solutions.

d.    Cost and efficiency of energy source.

e.    Possible environmental impacts, pollutants/waste issues.

f.     What makes your camp better than other camps?
