CHEM/CHBE/MSE 6750

Spring 2023

Position Paper Format

1.   Title “State of the Art In/Of… ..” should designate the polymer chemistry focus you are writing about and, where possible, specify the boundaries around the area you are           covering. This should not be a topic of your current research.

2.   You are to use the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Articles template for your paper. You can find both MS Word and Macintosh templates at:

http://pubs.acs.org/page/jacsat/submission/jacsat_templates.html

You should be the sole author and use the address for your Major School at the Georgia Institute of Technology. It is suggested you review a few published papers for use of     figures and tables throughout the paper.

3.   Key words: select 3-6 keywords that someone searching the internet for information in   your field might use in an attempt to find information. Place these just after your address and before the Abstract.

4.   Abstract: You should write an abstract that tells the reader what the text of the paper encompasses. See J. Am. Chem. Soc. and Macromolecules for examples.

5.   Introduction: You should introduce the topic, relate how it fits into the world of polymer chemistry, and detail why the material you are covering can be seen as state of the art.    This is a good place to refer to recent high-quality review articles.

6.   Body of the text: You can use your own judgment and creativity in how you lay out the  text within the confines of the template. This should be written to inform someone of the relevance and importance of the work in the field.

7.   Figures and Tables: Use Figures and Tables from the literature that you appropriately reference that help you make the important points. Special consideration in grading is given to those who take the time to create their ownfigures that bring together results from various studies. Feel free to use color pictures if it helps.

8.   Summary: Provide a section at the end of your paper that compares and contrasts the    results and examples in your paper. Provide critical statements on the state-of-the field. The reader should understand the state of the art for your chosen topic.

9.   References: Put these at the end of the paper as a list and have them inserted where      appropriate throughout the text. Use the referencing format of the JACS. As this is a    state-of-the-art paper, a number of your references must come from the last five years.

The paper should be ~5-7 pages and is due on/before Thursday, April 20.
