Goal

In Week 4 and 5, we covered the method of descriptive statistics — the method of analyzing a sample — for the relationship between two variables (bivariate analysis). In this paper assignment, you will practice applying this method that you have learned to actual political science data and using your data analysis to create a substantive argument.

Assignment Overview

-   Select a pair of variables of your interest (each variable must take four or more values or categories) from the datasets provided in class (ces2019, anes2020, ipe2010, ipe2015, and usstates2010 available from POL232_W2022.RData), apply the method of descriptive statistics for a bivariate analysis that you learned in Week 4 and 5, and write a paper (within 5 pages, double-spaced) on the relationship between these variables based on your analysis.

-   In the paper, you should (i) offer r snqs!ru!!v?/!U?ol?!!Orl ?xd?O!r!!ou about the relationship of the variables ofyour choice, (ii) discuss the ?ud!l!Orl relationship between the variables based on the visualization and linear regression analysis, and (iii) provide a snqs!ru!!v? !u!?ldl?!r!!ou rup !udl!Or!!ous for the relationship based on the substantive/theoretical expectation and the empirical relationship.

Requirements

More specific requirements are as follows:

1.  Your paper should be within five pages, 12pt font, one-inch (= 2.54cm) margins all around, double spaced including footnotes, tables and figures. Ifyou would like to add a cover page, please include only the class code and name (“POL232H1F Introduction to Quantitative Reasoning II”), the title of your paper, your student number, and your name.1 You may also add an additional page at the end of your paper for bibliography only. Therefore, if you have both a cover page and a bibliography, your submission can be up to seven pages long, with the first page being the cover page only and the last the bibliography only. Note that there is no minimum number of pages required for this assignment.

2.   In your paper, you should address the following.

(1) Use a pair of variables ofyour interest from the datasets provided in class, which meet the following criteria.

(5) Discuss the empirical relationship you found between the two variables ofyour choice based on the visualization(s) in (3) above and the linear regression result in (4) above. Also offer a substantive interpretation and implications for the relationship of the two variables of your choice in light of your substantive/theoretical expectation for the relationship  in  (2)  above  in  addition to the visualization(s)  in  (3)  and the  linear regression result in (4). Note that you need both the discussion on your finding of the relationship in your analysis (= the empirical relationship) and the discussion on the substantive  interpretation  and  implications  of your  finding.  These  two  types  of discussion may be  separate, may be  combined,  or may be partially  separate  and partially combined. Which one is the most effective way to organize your discussion may be different depending on the variables of your choice. You should come up with an effective way to organize the discussion for your variables, and how effectively your discussion is organized is part of the evaluation.

3.   The  relationship  you  may  find  in  your  data  analysis  may  be  different  from  your substantive/theoretical expectation. This is fine. In this case, report the relationship you find in your data (this is “the empirical relationship you found” in 2-(5) above) and offer a reasoned speculation about why you didn’t find the relationship you expected (this is part of your “substantive interpretation and implications” in 2-(5) above). By a “reasoned” speculation, I mean that the discussion should not be a complete speculation without any basis, but it should be based on a reasonable logical argument based on certain grounds (e.g., outside knowledge, an existing substantive theory). For example, if the relationship you propose is a causal relationship, we know from what we learned in POL222 that sometimes  the  true  causal  relationship  may  be  masked  by  a  bias  from  omitting  a confounding variable, and you may base your speculation on this knowledge.

4.   This is not merely a data analysis assignment but a paper assignment. Data analysis is normally conducted for a certain substantive purpose and meaningful only in that context. On most occasions of data analysis, what matters eventually is the quality of your argument based on your analysis. In particular, you need to accurately and effectively communicate your  findings  with  the  audience  under  certain  restrictions  (e.g.,  page  numbers  and presentation time). In addition to an appropriate data analysis, this paper assignment places an emphasis on this aspect — effective writing and communication — of data analysis. Accordingly, in this assignment, the subject of evaluation is the overall quality of your argument in your paper based on your analysis. The evaluation of the quality of argument includes how accurately and reasonably you interpret the result ofyour analysis, including visualizations, how effectively you communicate your findings, and how substantively rich and interesting your discussion is.4 Your R script is not part of the evaluation, and you are not required to submit your R script or discuss what you did in R in your paper. Instead, focus your discussion on the more substantive matters specified herein.

9.   Save your paper as a PDF and upload your paper to the submission link of the class Quercus site. This is because if you upload your paper in other file types, Quercus may change the format — organization and appearance — of your paper. To keep your original format intact, make sure to save your paper as a PDF and submit the PDF file.

Suggestions

-   Use those listed below as your reference.

-    Week 4 and 5 lecture slides and videos,

-    R Handbook 3 and 4 and your R scripts based on them, and

-    Homework 3 and 4 Answer Keys.

-   For your analysis in R, write an R script, so that you can always replicate what you have done easily. As suggested above, however, you are not required to submit your R script, and the R script is not part of the evaluation.

-   Start early. You first need to conduct your analysis in R, and then write a paper based on it.

-   Ask for help at an early stage ifyou get stuck on your analysis in R. We may not be able to help you in a timely manner if you seek help too close to the deadline.

-   Don’t try to be too creative. Don’t overthink, as you need to submit the paper in a limited period of time.

-   Leave sufficient time to write and polish your paper, as the evaluation will be on the quality of your argument and writing in your paper.

Discussion Board on the Class Quercus Site

There will be a forum on the paper assignment on the Discussion Board of the class Quercus site. You may post questions regarding the paper assignment on that forum. Your classmates will also benefit from getting your questions addressed on the Discussion Board.

As specified in the syllabus, if you send teaching assistants or the instructor a question of non- personal nature, your question will be posted on the Discussion Board of the class Quercus site, and the teaching assistant in charge of the Discussion Board on that day will address your question. You may get your question addressed more quickly if you post your question directly on the Discussion Board of the class Quercus site. However, if you want to ask a question anonymously, you may send your question via email to your teaching assistant or the instructor, who will post your question on the Discussion Board for you.

Check the Discussion Board of the class Quercus site regularly since there may be answers to important questions for completing this paper assignment.

Note that questions asked close to the deadline, especially on the due date of the paper, may not be addressed in time. You are best advised to ask your questions well in advance.

Also note that we cannot address your questions during the weekends.

Office Hours

There will be office hours both by the instructor and teaching assistants. If you want to discuss or seek advice on the paper assignment, stop by during these office hours. The details of office hours will be announced on Quercus.

If you cannot visit office hours due to scheduling conflicts, you may send an email to your tutorial instructor to seek advice. Please consider visiting office hours first, as the feedback of this kind may be best communicated in office hours. Note that advice on your paper via email will be limited compared to that which may be communicated during office hours.

Please note that neither the instructor nor teaching assistants will be able to read/review your draft paper when you seek advice. Again, questions asked close to the deadline, especially on the due date of the essay, may not be addressed in time. You are best advised to ask your questions well in advance.

Quantitative Methods Peer Tutors

You may also visit quantitative methods peer tutors’ office hours to get their peer advice on your paper idea and data analysis. You can find their office hours schedule and other details on the class Quercus site. Please note that peer tutors will not be able to read/review your draft paper when you seek advice.

Collaboration

Your paper must be your individual work. You may discuss your paper ideas and data analyses with your classmates, as long as you and your peers do not write a paper on the same topic and the same variables, and you and your peers do not read/refer to each other’s papers. More specifically, the acceptable form of collaboration is that you work on a different topic and different variables from your peers, and mutually critique each other’s ideas and data analyses. Discussing with your classmates if you both work on the same topic and variables should be avoided as it may result in a form of academic misconduct. This is because your papers may show significant similarities to each other’s, such as important parts of your paper being based on someone else’s idea, or the same idea being used by both students. You are asked to write an original paper of your own.

You should not read/refer to your classmates’ papers for this class, and you should not share your papers with your classmates. This is because one of the most common forms of academic offense in the paper assignments in this class in the past was that a student read someone else’s paper for this class and used the same or too similar arguments (more on this below in the section on “Academic Misconduct”).

As you are expected to complete this paper assignment on your own, generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, should not be used to create your assignment outline or draft.

Assignment Submission

As specified in the syllabus, your paper will be submitted to the class Quercus site, which uses the University’s plagiarism detection tool. The paper submission link is available in the homepage of the  class  Quercus  site  (more  precisely,  click  “Paper  2  Submission”  under  “Second  Paper Assignment.”).

If you want to make an alternative arrangement, you need to send an email to the teaching assistant grading your paper, at least one week before the deadline of the assignment and ask for an alternative way to submit the paper. If you choose an alternative arrangement, you may be asked, for example, to submit all of your rough work for an assignment and to have a short meeting with the teaching assistant or the instructor in which you will be asked about your paper.

Since you will submit your assignments to Quercus, your submission must be accepted and recorded on Quercus before the due date and time. Note that the date and time recorded on Quercus will be your submission date and time. If this is after the deadline even only by one minute, then your submission will be considered late. In other words, completing your paper and starting to upload it to Quercus before the due date and time is not enough. Your upload must be complete before the due date and time.

Also, after you  submit your paper, make  sure you open your  submission  from the Paper 2 submission link and confirm that the correct file was uploaded. If the file uploaded is not correct, then  it  is not  considered  as  a proper  submission,  and  a  late penalty will be  applied to the resubmitted paper.

As suggested above, your submission should be in a PDF file. If you upload a file in a different format, Quercus will not accept your submission. 

Computer-related problems, such as the crash of your computer, a slow Internet connection, and an occasional slow response of the server, will not be considered as an acceptable reason to request for extension or waiver of a late penalty. Also sending your assignment to the instructor and/or the teaching assistants via email will not be considered as a submission. For these reasons, I strongly suggest you avoid a last-minute completion or submission of assignments. Since the crash of your computer is not considered as an acceptable reason to request for an extension or waiver of a late penalty, I also suggest you frequently take a backup of the electronic files of your draft paper in an electronic storage other than your computer. If you have a UTmail+ account, you have access to 1TB of storage in your OneDrive at UofT. You may take a backup in your OneDrive.

Academic Misconduct

The University of Toronto treats cases of academic misconduct very seriously. All suspected cases of academic dishonesty related to the paper assignment will be examined following the procedures outlined      in      the      University’s      Code      of     Behaviour      on      Academic      Matters (https://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/academic-advising-and-support/student-academic-            integrity).  For  specific  examples  of the  potential  academic  offences,  please  read Academic Misconduct         (https://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/academic-advising-and-support/student- academic-integrity/academic-misconduct)     and      The     Scope     of     Academic     Integrity (https://www.academicintegrity.utoronto.ca/perils-and-pitfalls/). Please note that, in general, not knowing the University’s expectations cannot be an excuse. Under the Code, “the offense shall likewise be deemed to have been committed if the person ought reasonably to have known” (Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters, web version, p.2).

It was suggested above that you should not refer to your classmates’ paper assignments for this class. Also, you should not refer to someone else’s paper assignments submitted for this class in the past years. One of the most common forms of an academic offense in the paper assignments in this class in the past was that a student read someone else’s paper for this course and used the same or too similar arguments therein. According to the Code, “to use or possess an unauthorized aid or aids or obtain unauthorized assistance in any academic examination or term test or in connection with any other form of academic work” and “to represent as one’s own an idea or expression of an idea or work of another in any academic examination or term test or in connection with any other form of academic work” are considered as academic offense (p.3).

Note that sharing your papers with others may result in your academic offense, if they commit academic offense based on your papers, as “assisting another student in committing an offense” is also considered an academic offense under the Code.6

It was suggested above that generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, should not be used to create your assignment outline or draft. Please note that the use of such tools may be considered as academic offense because they are understood as “unauthorized aid” according to what is specified in the instructions.

Late Penalties and Extension

As specified in the syllabus, a paper assignment handed in late will result in a penalty of a 2- percentage-point reduction per day (e.g., from 72% to 70%). Submitting a paper within 24 hours from the due date and time will be considered one day late; submitting after 24 hours but before 48 hours will be two days late, and so forth.

Extension for the paper assignment (or a waiver of a late penalty) may be made only when there is  a  legitimate  reason,  such  as  an unforeseeable  medical  emergency,  an  accessibility  issue, religious observances, or a family emergency, and there is an acceptable official documentation, which verifies the specific reason given, such as an Accessibility Services Letter or a College Registrar’s Letter. If you need an extension for accessibility reasons, the extension may be granted based on your Accessibility Services Letter. Given the current COVID- 19 situation, the University does not require the Verification of Illness or Injury form (or “doctor’s note”) in 2022-23. Instead, if you must be absent from your study and need an extension for a legitimate reason except for accessibility  (e.g.,  COVID,  cold,  flu  and  other  illness  or  injury,  family  situation,  religious observances), you should record your absence through the ACORN online absence declaration and then make a request for an extension to the teaching assistant who will grade your paper.

A request for an extension (or a waiver of a late penalty) for the reasons not mentioned above may be accommodated only when the reasons suggested are equally legitimate to those specified above, and there is acceptable documentation which verifies the specific reason given, such as College Registrar’s Letter.

Students who know in advance they will need an extension for a legitimate reason should make a request to their teaching assistant via email as early as possible before the deadline. Those who missed the deadline for a legitimate, unforeseeable reason should contact their teaching assistant as soon as possible and no later than one week after returning to class. In the request email, don’t forget to include your full name, student number, lecture section, and tutorial section.

As stated in the syllabus, “Conflict with other class’s assignment/exam schedule  … is not an acceptable reason to … request an extension” (p.5). For the sake of fairness, this policy will be strictly enforced. Your other classes may have assignments and/or tests due around the same time this assignment is due; however, keep in mind that they will not be considered as an acceptable reason for extension. Plan your assignments accordingly.

Grade Appeals

As specified in the syllabus, there are two stages in the process of grade appeals on the data analysis paper assignments in this class. First, you may appeal to your grader, who is normally a teaching assistant for your lecture section. You are required to raise specific and substantive questions regarding the grades and feedback you received, so that your grader may double check their assessment based on them and address your questions. The grader may adjust the grade if they found it appropriate. Second, if you still believe the grade you received is not appropriate after appealing to the grader, you may request a regrading to the instructor. You are required to submit a  brief documentation  substantiating  why  you  believe  your  grade  is  not  appropriate.  The justification you gave for regrading will be used by the instructor to consider if there are reasonable grounds  for regrading.  If your regrading request  is  considered reasonable,  another teaching assistant who did not give your original mark will be assigned to regrade your paper with fresh eyes.  This  second  grader will regrade your paper without knowing your  original mark, the feedback given by the first grader, and the justification you gave for regrading. This is because your paper should be marked only on its quality based on the paper requirements and evaluation criteria. The regraded mark may go up or down from the original mark. The new mark will be your final mark whether it goes up or down from the original. Both the grade appeal to the first grader and the regrading request to the instructor must be made within two weeks from when the original grade is assigned.
