TUTORIAL 1

Tutorial Activity #1

Consider the Malthusian model and assume

Y = zF(L,N) = zLa N1_a ,   0 < α < 1

and

 = ( )y ,   0 < γ < 1

Remember that in equilibrium C = Y

(a) Find N\  as a function of N

(b) Does a positive steady-state value for N exist? If it does, find this steady- state value and denote it by N* . Is it a steady state? What is the condition for the stability of the steady-state?

(c) What will be the steady-state of this model if α = 1? Explain the short- run and the long-run effects of an increase in z in this case.

Tutorial Activity #2

Idea of the problem: A different g(c) function with the possibility of mul- tiple steady-state and g(c) = 1 for c greater than a certain threshold

Consider the Malthusian economy in the gure below.  Initially, the econ- omy is in a steady-state with per capita consumption equal to c 1(*)  and land per person equal to l 1(*) .  I have labelled this initial steady-state point e1  in both panels of the gure.

(a) Suppose that the quantity of land in this economy increase. Redraw the two panels of the figure and show both the short-run and long-run ef-fects of this change on the economy. Compare your results with the standard Malthusian model that we discussed in class.

(b) Suppose the quantity of land in this economy decrease.   Redraw the two panels in a new figure and show both the short-run and long-run effects of this change on the economy. Compare your results with those in part (a).
