Question 1 (25 marks)

Sports-in-Motion Pte Ltd is a fast-growing local sports retailer that offers a wide range of high- performance  sporting  apparel,  footwear  and  accessories.  Mr.  Jonathan  Chang,  the  Managing Director of the company has recently decided to purchase five new desktops.

Jonathan visited a consumer’s IT show recently at the Suntec City and found a branded desktop which  could  be  suitable  for  the  company.  The  desktop  has  the  following  specifications:

Before making the purchase, Jonathan has decided to consult you on the following computer hardware related questions:

(a)       State and explain that specific type of information system that can be used to help top level

executives to analyse, compare and highlight trends in important areas of the business. (4 marks)

(b)       Explain the meaning of 3.0GHz stated in Row 1 of the specifications table. (3 marks)

(c)       State the name of the hardware component referred to by the specifications stated in Row 2. Briefly explain the functions of that component. (4 marks)

(d)       Explain the main factors that will affect the access time of the hardware component stated in Row 3 of the specifications table. (4 marks)

(e)       Discuss how data are being stored, organised and accessed in the hardware component stated

in Row 3 of the specifications table. (6 marks)

(f)        Jonathan told you that all the computers he has selected would come with a large 2TB hard

disk. Thus, he felt that having a large Random Access Memory is no longer essential. Explain to him why is it still important to have a large RAM memory despite having a large capacity hard disk. (4 marks)

Question 2 (25 marks)

The desktop PCs will be loaded with Windows 11 Operating System. Jonathan would also like to know more about the Operating System and other software applications:

(a)       Explain the main functions being carried out by the software component stated in Row 5 of

the specifications table listed in Question 1. (8 marks)

(b)       List THREE (3) examples of other business application software that the company should

consider purchasing in order to support the business operations. (3 marks)

(c)       Recommend THREE (3) system utilities that can be used to scan and reorganise data stored in the hardware component stated in Row 3 of the specifications table listed in Question 1. Briefly explain how these utility applications can help to enhance the performance of the hardware component stated in Row 3 of the specifications table listed in Question 1. (6 marks)

(d)       Jonathan  is  also  exploring  other  software  alternatives.  Explain  the  concept  of Cloud Computing. (4 marks)

(e)       Give an example of an Open Source Alternative to Microsoft Office. Discuss THREE (3)

attributes of an Open Source software. (4 marks)

SECTION B

Question 3 (25 marks)

Case: Network for retail stores and external access from home office and suppliers

Sports-in-Motion Pte Ltd is planning to open another physical retail store apart from the existing one at VivoCity. The new store to be located at Funan Mall will be required to install a sales terminal for capturing sales data and managing inventory being received each day. Inventory data at each store will be updated daily and then sent to the Inventory Management System (IMS) at the Head Office.

You are given the following requirements for the network :

•   All stores will have one sales terminal (POS) and one Desktop for the manager to monitor sales and communicate with Head Office.

•   All stores will have one Tablet to check new stocks when they arrive.

•   All stores will need to connect to Head Office located at Capital Tower in the city where a POS server and IMS server are installed to support the retail operations.

•   During the pandemic, Head Office employees are required to work from home with access to resources in the company’s info systems.

•   The IMS can be used to exchange information with the external suppliers who can plan for their daily delivery to the retail stores. Such integration and services allow the staffs to focus on sales and customer services rather than spending time in inventory planning.

(a)       State a list of essential computer equipment, network devices and network services required

to set up the network infrastructure. (5 marks)

(b)       Draw a simple network diagram to illustrate your proposed network infrastructure.

You should indicate (label) the computer equipment, network devices and services required clearly to show how they should be connected.

You should also indicate the use of wired or wireless connections in the diagram. (8 marks)

(c)       Employees are working remotely from home and need to access to information resources at the Head Office. Identify ONE (1) popular networking solution that can be used to connect to Head Office without compromising security. Explain how it provides secured connection to the Head Office. (6 marks)

(d)       Discuss the THREE (3) common types of network topologies used in telecommunication networks. (6 marks)
