Coursework Problems 2022-23, part 2

Unless stated otherwise, assume T = 298 K and n = 1. Marks will be awarded for correct use of units in calculations, plots and table headings, for proper labelling of graphs and sketches, for accurate descriptions and for clear explanations.

1.    Electron transfer reactions can be understood in terms of potential energy curves (This was covered in CHEM6022). Describe, with suitable diagrams and notes:

a.    the effect of electrode potential on the thermodynamic driving force for the reaction, [2 marks]

b.    the effect of electrode potential on the transition state for the reaction, [2 marks]

c.    the molecular information contained within the standard rate of electron transfer (ks). [2 marks]

2.    The figure below shows a simple representation of a basic potentiostat circuit.

a.    What are the roles of electrodes 1, 2 and 3 in the figure in a voltammetric measurement? [2 marks]

b.    What is the purpose of the counter electrode in a 3-electrode measurement? What   factors should you take into account when choosing a suitable counter electrode for an experiment? [3 marks]

c.    What is the role of op-amp B? If the value of Vout is +0. 179 V, what is the current flowing at the working electrode? Is it an oxidation current or a reduction current? [3 marks]

d.    Why is it important that the inverting input of op-amp A, which connects to electrode 1, has a high input impedance? [2 marks]

3.    The diffusion layer thickness at a rotating disc electrode is given by 1    1       1

6 = 4.98 D3 v6 业2

where D is the diffusion coefficient of the redox species, v the kinematic viscosity of the solution,  the rotation rate (rpm) of the electrode and the constant 4.98 has units of       rpm1/2 s1/2 .

An electrochemical cell is filled with 20 mL of a solution with 5 mM K4Fe(CN)6 and 0.5 M KCl. DFe(CN)6(4)  = 0.63×10-5 cm2 s- 1 and vH2O = 10-2 cm2 s- 1 .

a.    Calculate the mass transport limited current expected for the oxidation of

[Fe(CN)6]4- to [Fe(CN)6]3- at a rotating disc electrode if the electrode has a radius of 0.20 cm and is rotating at 600 rpm. [2 marks]

b.    Sketch the concentration profiles for the [Fe(CN)6]4- and [Fe(CN)6]3- ions when the electrode potential is such that the current is at its mass transport limit. [2 marks]

4.    The Nernst-Planck equation

Ji (x, t) = 一Di       ax      RT Di ci (x, t)     ax     + ci (x, t)v(x, t)

is extensively used to model electrochemical processes and predict how an electrode responds after a perturbation.

a.    Briefly give the name, unit and physical meaning for the following quantities: Ji , x, t, Di , ci , zi , 牵, and v. [4 marks]

b.    Briefly describe the physical meaning of terms 1, 2 and 3 where term 1 = 一Di

term 2 = 一  Di ci (x, t) a t())

term 3 = +ci (x, t)v(x, t) [6 marks]

5.

a.    Draw suitable diagrams to illustrate the evolution of the diffusion field at a 25 µm diameter disc electrode when a compound is oxidised under mass transfer limiting conditions. In each case, sketch the voltammogram that would be obtained. [6 marks]

b.    If the potential at a 10 µm diameter microelectrode is stepped from a value where no reaction occurs to a value where the reaction is mass transport limited, calculate the  resulting current 0.5 ms and 10 s after the step. Assume D = 5× 10-6 cm2 s- 1, c = 1     mM and n = 1 for the redox species in solution. [4 marks]
