CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT 1

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 100 marks (30%)

Students are to upload their assignment by the due date to their student portal account. After the due date, students’ submissions will not be entertained.

Students  should  keep  a  copy  of  the  assignment  submitted.  All  workings  must  be  shown. The submitted report must show evidence that this is the students’ own work.

Write your FULL Name AND your student ID as in the register on the answer script.

Please be reminded that plagiarism and collusion is a serious offence, and all cases will be referred to the  administration.  Grades will  be withheld  if the  submission  is  suspected for  plagiarism or collusion till investigations are completed.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT 1 [Total marks: 100 marks (20%)]

Answer ALL questions in Sections A and B.

Submit two documents in Canvas.

(1)       A MS Word document (use the template provided in Canvas) answering Section A.

(2)       An Excel file answering Section B.

SECTION A (50 marks)

(1)       For each variable listed below, state the variable type [Qualitative or Quantitative (please state Discrete or Continuous)]

(2)       For each ofthe following variables, state the Level of Measurement (Nominal, Ordinal

or Ratio).

(3)       Axer computer has 200 customers who bought the new laptop model last month. The company has decided to take a sample of 50 customers to assess their satisfaction with their purchase. The company has information about the customers Age, Gender and Annual Income.

(a)       Describe how a simple random sampling may be carried out.

(b)       Describe how a stratified sample can be selected. (8 marks)

(4)       State  and  briefly  explain  whether  the  statements  below  refer  to  descriptive  or inferential statistics.

(a)       A survey of 5 top selling 10-inch tablet computers revealed a mean price of $800.

(b)       Laptop prices are expected to increase in the next quarter due to a shortage of computer chips.

(c)       The revenue of TXMC, the world top semiconductor foundry, is estimated to decrease by 20% because of an expected slowdown in chip demand. (9 marks)

(5a)     Explain what is meant by the statement “There is only one true population parameter

whereas the value of a statistic is sample dependent” . (3 marks)

(5b)     For the value highlighted in bold in the statements below, indicate whether it is a

Parameter or Statistic.

(i)        In a random survey of 50 fresh graduates, 10 of them stated that they would purchase a new laptop within the next 3 years.

(ii)       Only 50% of all students who sat for the “Python Programming Course” completed the course (4 marks)

(6)       The following stem-and-leaf diagram shows the monthly commissions ($) earned by a sample of computer sales staff.

(a)       State the minimum and maximum amount of commissions earned. (4 marks)

(b)       Compute the median monthly commission. (2 marks)

(c)       What is the shape of the distribution? Would you expect the median to be higher than the mean?

[Note: You do not need to calculate the mean] (4 marks)

(d)       State one advantage of a stem and leaf diagram over a histogram. (2 marks)

Section B (50 marks)

A student doing a subject “Consumer Behaviour” is conducting research about young people under 30 years old purchasing computers in the next 3 months. He was able to sample a group

of 50 respondents who were considering buying a computer within the next three months.
