Essay 1

Essay instructions

Choose a topic from the list provided in the document “Essay  1 Topics and References.” Most have a list of relevant pages in one or more of the following books:  Mathematics,  its Content, Methods and Meaning  (CMM), The Princeton  Companion to Mathematics  (PCM), and  What is Mathematics?  (WiM).

You can also choose a topic not on the list, with instructor permission.

You may work individually or with a partner.  Partners will receive the same marks on the essay but MAY receive different grades on the presentation.

Important:  No more than three essays can be submitted on the same topic.  You must submit your topic choice for approval.

This limitation does not apply to the “Other” category, but you must email the instructor and receive approval before you can select this option on the poll.

You are writing for an audience of your peers.  Your objective is to answer the question, “What is...?”

The essay is on a mathematical subject, and one of the marking criteria is mathematical depth. Make sure you include some mathematical content appropriate to a senior undergraduate course. Some examples of mathematical content are: performing a calculation, presenting an example or a counterexample, proving a proposition or a theorem.

It is also appropriate to include some discussion of the history and the context of your topic. Use your own judgement to find a balance between qualitative and quantitative exposition.

Write with your own voice. You don’t have to cover precisely the same topics as your source material.  Choose your own priorities, and convey them in your own words.  Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

These topics are wide. Try to grasp some of the big picture.

While doing your research, you will likely encounter concepts and terminology that are unfa- miliar. Use these with caution.

You must type your essay using LATEX  and you must use a Bibliography environment to list your references.  (See below.)

Using LATEX, prepare 3-4 single-spaced pages, including references but not including diagrams. (You can increase the line spacing for aesthetic reasons if you like, but the amount of material should equal at least 3 pages single-spaced, but also no more than 4 pages.)

References

Use between two and four sources that have been published in print: that is, books or journal articles. A thesis is not considered a published source. Your sources can include one or more of the books CMM, PCM, WiM.

You may use at most one Wikipedia or Wolfram Mathworld page of your choice.  No other online sources are permitted. (But online sources can be useful for finding published sources.)

Example code for creating a bibliography in LATEX will be posted on  Quercus.   You are not required to use a specific citation style, but you should choose one style and apply it consistently.

Deadlines

Select your topic and submit it in Quercus. (You will find the question about your first essay topic in Surveys). You must let me know about your topic and get my admission by January 16.

A complete essay draft is due on Sunday, January 22 . Please bring two hard copies. The peer review copies will be distributed among other students, and who will provide feedback on your essay draft. You must use to submit the PDF file through Crowdmark.

The final copy of your essay is due on Sunday February 5. You must use to submit your LaTex file and PDF file through UTOR submit, and the PDF file through Crowdmark.

Normally, students will be required to submit their course essays to the University’s plagiarism detection tool for a review of textual similarity and detection of possible plagiarism. In doing so, students will allow their essays to be included as source documents in the tool’s reference database, where they will be used solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism.  The terms that apply to the University’s use of this tool are described on the Centre for Teaching Support Innovation web site (https://uoft.me/pdt-faq).

Students may wish to opt out of using the plagiarism detection tool.  In order to opt out, contact your instructor by email no later than two (2) weeks after the start of classes. If you have opted out, then specific information on an alternative method to submit your assignment can be found below.

Evaluation

– Mathematical criteria:  clarity, correctness, depth, logic.  Does the essay include some mathematical reasoning, and is it logically valid? Is the math conveyed accurately, and with a suitable amount of detail? Are words like “therefore” used appropriately?

– Writing criteria: clarity, voice, structure, grammar, sources, LATEX.  Is the essay free of typos and other English errors?  Are the explanations clearly written?  Are the ideas presented in a logical order? Is there a clear distinction between the author’s voice and that of the source material?

You can book an appointment with Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre, but book your appointments early enough since they might be busy.  Make an appointment for your writing skills. Please note that they offer appointment for Math skills as well, those ones are not suitable for you and they are for first year math students.
