OBJECTIVES/COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is an introduction to discrete mathematics. The course will focus on establishing basic principles and motivate the relevance of those principles by providing examples of applications in Computing Science.

REQUIRED TEXT

Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics (an Applied Introduction) 5th Edition, Ralph P. Grimaldi, Addison- Wesley, 2004.

COURSE ASSESSMENT

Evaluation weight and components are as follows:

Note:

-   Students must attain an overall passing grade on the weighted average of exams in the course in order to obtain a clear pass (C- or better)

-   Students who do not obtain a passing grade in the final exam may not obtain a pass (D or better)

FINAL EXAM

The final exam will be cumulative, including materials from week 1 to 13 of the course.

MIDTERM EXAMS

The midterm exams will take place on June 9th (materials from weeks 1-4) and July 14th (materials from week 5-9) at 7:00pm. Details will be given during the class announcements.

PROBLEM SETS

Problem sets from the textbook are posted each week and act as an augmentation to what we discussed in class. Although no points are awarded for its completion, it's highly recommended that you do each week's problem set as the questions are very closely related to those appearing on exams/quizzes.

QUIZZES

There will be 5 quizzes throughout the semester and will take place on Wednesdays. Each quiz will be posted for a length of 24 hours and you will be given roughly 20 minutes to complete the questions once you’ve started. Quizzes will be based on the materials from last two weeks of classes. There are no re-takes for missed quizzes.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

There are no live classes for asynchronous course so your class participation and attendance will be based on inclass submissions each week.

GRADE DISTRIBUTION

Grade distribution is not pre-determined. It may vary from semester to semester.

COMMUNICATION

Please contact me through email and I will try to respond within 48 hours.

MAKE-UP EXAMS

FIC does not offer any make-up opportunities for missed final exams. Please be sure to check your exam schedule very carefully. If you miss an exam for any reason, please see an advisor immediately. If you have documented reasons for exam accommodations, please see an advisor immediately.

There are no make-up opportunities for missed midterms or quizzes.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

Academic Integrity refers the values on which good academic work must be founded: honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility. Academic integrity includes a commitment not to engage in or tolerate acts of falsification, misrepresentation or deception. Such acts of dishonesty violate the fundamental ethical principles of the College community and compromise the worth of work completed by others.

Students found to have breached the regulations related to any form of academic misconduct including but not limited to plagiarism and cheating will be subject to the following measures:

•   First Offence: Awarded “0” for the assessment and given a permanent record on their file

•   Second Offence: Awarded “0” for the course, regardless whether the offence was committed in the same course or another course

•   Third Offence: Risk expulsion from FIC and the cancellation of Study Permit

It is solely the student’s responsibility to be aware of Academic Integrity Policy and consequences of violating it. The policy is available at: http://85401dc13f6ba5867f46-aacfababc729cd49a24606938417f53d.r33.cf6.rackcdn.com/FIC_Academic_Integrity_Policy.pdf

HOW CAN YOU DO WELL IN THIS COURSE?

1.  Complete the problem sets every week. Make sure that you understand the weekly material before exiting the classroom. The last hour of class is dedicated to doing this. Be sure to understand, not memorize.

2.  Attend class and office hours. This is the only time that we have to interact, please take advantage of it.

3.  Read ahead before class. At the beginning of the week, I will post an outline of materials to be discussed and also the textbook references. Be sure to read this over before class, it is always easier to prepare than to review.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Each week, a set of 3 to 4 videos will be posted on Monday. They will include:

-   A short announcement video

-   Lectures for that week broken into 30~45 minute videos

After the lecture, you will asked to complete an inclass assignment due on the Thursday of that week. I will post an additional video each Friday explaining the inclass solutions.
